Korean battery makers have been caught flatfooted as the largest in the business signed a deal with Ford, allowing indirect access to the U.S. market through technology licensing.

Ford announced Tuesday that it will build a $3.5 billion EV battery plant in Michigan using lithiumiron-phosphate, or LFP, battery technology and technical expertise from Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the Chinese company that has the largest share in the market.

포드는 화요일(현지시간 2월 13일) 미시간에 시장점유율 1위인 중국 CATL의 리튬인산철(LFP) 배터리 기술과 전문지식을 활용하는 35억 달러 규모의 배터리 공장을 건설할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

This will allow the Ningde, China-based company to gain access to the U.S. market despite the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) making it difficult for batteries with Chinese components and minerals to be sold in the United States.

The Michigan-based automaker will hold 100 percent of the CATL plant instead of establishing a joint venture, which differs from other recent deals struck between car companies and Korean battery makers.

“Under Ford’s strategy, Ford vehicles that are equipped with CATL batteries will be eligible for the IRA tax credit as they are made in Michigan,” said Park Chul-wan, a professor at Seojeong University’s smart car engineering department. “The bigger problem is that if this strategy works, other EV makers like General Motors and Stellantis are highly likely to take similar steps,” Park added.

서정대 스마트자동차학과 박철완 교수는 “CATL 배터리를 장착한 포드 자동차들은 미시간에서 만들어졌기 때문에 IRA 세액공제 대상이 된다는 것이 포드의 전략”이라고 말했다. 박 교수는 “더 큰 문제는 이 전략이 기능한다면 GM이나 스텔란티스 같은 다른 전기차 제조업체들도 분명 비슷한 수순을 밟을 것이라는 점이다”라고 덧붙였다.

The U.S. IRA prevents buyers of cars containing components from a “foreign entity of concern” — a reference to China, Iran, Russia and North Korea — from receiving up to a $7,500 tax credit for EVs assembled in North America.Details about the battery component rules will be issued in March by the U.S. Treasury Department.

미국 IRA 법안은 중국, 이란, 러시아, 북한 같은 ‘해외 우려 국가’의 부품을 포함하고 있는 자동차를 사는 사람들은 북미에서 조립된 전기차를 사는 사람들에게 주는 최대 7500달러의 세액공제 혜택을 받을 수 없도록 하고 있다. 배터리 부품 관련 규정에 대한 세부사항은 오는 3월에 미국 재무부가 발표할 예정이다.

“Demand for LFP batteries is still high, and in these circumstances, there is no way automakers rule China out in this cutthroat EV competition,” Park said.

박 교수는 “LFP 배터리에 대한 수요는 여전히 높다. 그리고 이처럼 전기차 경쟁이 치열한 상황에서 자동차 회사들이 중국을 배제하는 것은 사실상 불가능하다”고 말했다.

Despite less energy density, LFP batteries are largely favored by global automakers lately due to their cheaper price tags compared to today’s batteries containing nickel, cobalt and manganese (NCM). They are known to be around 30 percent cheaper than NCM batteries.

Ford said its Mustang Mach-Es, the most popular EV from the brand, will begin using LFP batteries starting this year, followed by the F-150 Lightning trucks in 2024. It came after a series of studies found that Mach-Es are driven 32 miles or fewer a day.Tesla is already using LFP batteries in its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Volkswagen and Stellantis are also increasing the usage of cheaper LFP batteries.

포드는 자사 전기차 브랜드 가운데 가장 인기 있는 머스탱 마하E가 올해부터 LFP 배터리는 사용하기 시작할 예정이며, 2024년에는 F-150 라이트닝 트럭도 그럴 것이라고 말했다. 일련의 연구를 통해 마하E가 하루에 32마일 이하를 주행한다는 것을 확인한 이후 나온 얘기다. 테슬라는 이미 LFP 배터리를 모델3와 모델Y에 사용하고 있으며 폭스바겐과 스텔란티스 역시 더 저렴한 LFP 배터리 사용을 늘리고 있다.

LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI are betting big on the so-called “high-manganese battery,” which refers to batteries made with about 70 percent less nickel and cobalt, the two most expensive raw materials. LG Energy Solution plans to shift its Nanjing plant to an LFP battery-dedicated facility. SK On recently succeeded in developing a pilot product of battery completely free of cobalt. The mass production will likely come as early as 2024.

bet: 돈을 걸다, 확신하다

LG에너지솔루션과 삼성SDI는 가장 비싼 재료인 니켈과 코발트가 약 70% 적게 들어간 일명 ‘하이망간 배터리’ 연구에 주력하고 있다. LG에너지솔루션은 올해 난징 공장을 LFP 배터리 공장으로 전환할 계획이다. SK온은 최근 코발트를 완전히 배제한 배터리 시제품을 개발하는데 성공했다. 양산은 이르면 2024년 가능할 전망이다.
