[Shortcut] 전기차 배터리가 뭔가요?

전기차 배터리 시장의 패권을 둘러싼 경쟁이 치열하게 전개되는 가운데 한국의 3대 전기차 배터리 기업과 현대자동차의 움직임도 빨라지고 있습니다. 현대차 정의선 부회장은 최근 삼성 이재용 부회장, LG 구광모 회장, SK 최태원 회장을 잇달아 만났습니다. 지난 21일엔 이재용 부회장이 현대차 남양연구소를 방문해 정의선 부회장을 만났습니다. 이렇게 재벌 회장들이 공개적으로 일대일 만남을 하는 건 흔치 않은 일입니다. 이유는 바로 전기차 배터리 때문이었습니다.

전기차가 뭔가요?

휘발유나 경유 같은 석유를 연료로 해서 가는 일반적인 내연기관 자동차와 달리 전기차는 전기로 가는 자동차를 말한다. 마치 스마트폰 배터리를 충전해야 스마트폰이 작동하는 것처럼 전기차 역시 커다란 배터리에 전기를 충전해서 달린다. 공해를 발생시키는 배기가스가 나오지 않아 세계 각국 정부가 사용을 권장하고 있다. 엔진이 없어 소음이 없고 차 안도 넓다. 20년 후엔 판매되는 자동차의 절반이 전기차가 될 것이라고 한다.

What are electric vehicles?

Unlike regular combustion engine-powered cars that run on fuel such as gasoline and diesel, electric vehicles are cars that run on electricity. Just like how a smartphone only works when its battery is charged, electric vehicles’ large batteries must be charged with electricity for it to run. Many governments globally are encouraging the use of electric vehicles as they do not emit fumes that cause pollution. Also, as these vehicles run on electric motors, there is no noise that is usually caused by engines and they are also spacious. In 20 years, it is predicted that half of the vehicles that are sold will be electric.

전기차 배터리가 왜 중요한가요?

전기차의 배터리는 전기차의 심장이라고 불리는 가장 중요한 부분이다. 내연기관 자동차의 엔진에 해당한다. 전기차가 한번 충전에 얼마나 멀리 갈 수 있는지, 또 충전은 얼마나 빨리 되는지를 결정하는 것이 바로 배터리다. 현재 전기차 배터리는 리튬이온 배터리로 충전에 오랜 시간이 걸리고 한번 충전에 500~600km 정도를 간다.
이보다 획기적으로 좋은 배터리를 단 전기차가 나온다면 단번에 세계 전기차 시장을 제패하게 될 수 있다. 꿈의 배터리로 불리는 전고체 배터리는 한번 충전에 800km를 갈 수 있다는 배터리로 각 회사들이 개발에 열을 올리고 있다.

Why are electric-vehicle batteries important?

Electric-vehicle batteries are the heart of an electric vehicle, just like an engine is the heart of an internal combustion cars, and therefore is the most important component. These batteries determine how far an electric vehicle can go after being charged, and how fast the battery can be charged in general. Currently, electric-vehicle batteries are lithium-ion batteries, which take a long time to charge and can run for 500 to 600 kilometers per charge.
If an electric vehicle with an upgraded battery is released, it could dominate the global electric vehicle market. The all-solid-state battery, dubbed the “dream battery”, is a battery that can run up to 800 kilometers on a single charge, and battery manufacturing companies are very keen to be the first to develop it.

*electric-vehicle battery : 전기차 배터리. 전기차는 배터리에서 나오는 전기 에너지로 모터를 움직여서 달린다.
*internal combustion engine : 내연기관. 휘발유나 경유 같은 석유 연료를 내부에서 폭발시켜 여기서 나오는 에너지로 차를 가게 만든다.
*lithium-ion battery : 리튬이온 배터리. 충전해서 다시 쓸 수 있는 전지를 2차 전지라고 부르는데, 현재 2차 전지 대부분이 리튬이온 배터리다. 스마트폰 등 대부분의 전자 기기와 전기차에 이 리튬이온 배터리를 쓴다.
*all-solid-state battery : 전고체 배터리. 기존의 리튬이온 배터리는 전해질로 액체를 쓰는데 전고체 배터리는 액체가 아닌 고체를 쓴다. 리튬이온 배터리보다 안정적이고 효율이 높다고 알려져 있다. 아직 개발 단계이며, ‘꿈의 배터리’로 불린다.

한국에선 어떤 배터리를 만들고 있나요?

LG화학, 삼성SDI, SK이노베이션은 전기차 배터리를 만드는 세계적인 기업들이다. 올해 1~5월 판매량 기준으로 LG화학 세계 1위, 삼성SDI는 세계 4위, SK이노베이션은 세계 7위다.
전기차를 대표하는 미국 테슬라도 LG화학 배터리를 쓴다. 현대차는 전기차 아이오닉과 코나에 LG화학 배터리를 쓴다. 기아자동차는 니로 등 판매하는 전기차에 SK이노베이션 배터리를 쓰고 있다.
삼성SDI는 아직 현대차에 배터리를 공급하고 있지 않다. 하지만 이재용 부회장과 정의선 부회장의 만남을 계기로 협력이 이뤄질 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 두 사람은 꿈의 배터리라고 불리는 전고체 배터리 개발에 대해 논의했다고 한다.

What kind of electric-vehicle batteries are currently being made in Korea?

LG Chem, Samsung SDI, and SK Innovation manufacture electric-vehicle batteries. In terms of sales from January to May this year, LG Chem ranks first worldwide, with Samsung SDI ranking fourth and SK Innovation seventh.
Tesla, a company that is globally recognized for its electric vehicles, also uses electric-vehicle batteries manufactured by LG Chem. Hyundai Motor uses LG Chem’s batteries on its electric vehicles, Hyundai Ioniq and Kona Electric. Kia Motors' electric vehicle lineup including the Niro uses SK Innovation's batteries.
Samsung SDI has not distributed its electric vehicle batteries to Hyundai Motor yet, but the meeting between Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Euisun Jung is expected to allow cooperation between the two companies. The two chairmen stated that they discussed the development of the all-solid-state “dream” battery during their meeting.
