League leaders Asan Woori Bank Woori Won landed in the WKBL Championship after beating the fourth-place Incheon Shinhan Bank S-Birds 70-58 in the second leg of the playoffs on Monday.

The playoffs are the stage in which four teams who finished in the top four in the WKBL compete to advance to the championship.

The team that wins the three-game playoff reaches the championship. The Woori Won had won the first leg against the S-Birds 65-51 last week.

The Asan side’s Kim Dan-bi, who won the MVP award for the regular season, displayed a solid performance against the S-Birds as she managed 14 points.

The S-Birds’ Kim Sonia and Kim Jin-young picked up 18 and 17 points respectively, but failed to save their side from a second defeat in the playoffs.

The first leg of the other playoff game between runners-up Busan BNK Sum and third-place Yongin Samsung Life Blue Minx ended with a 66-56 victory for the Busan side last Sunday. As of press time Tuesday, the second leg between the two sides was still due to be played later in the evening.

The third leg will be played on Thursday if the Blue Minx beat the BNK.

This season’s WKBL Championship is crucial for the Woori Won, because it is their chance to actually win the title after missing out on a technicality in the 2019-20 season, when they led the league, but the season was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Woori Won has won the championship 11 times, the most of any team in the WKBL. The S-Birds were crowned eight times, while the Blue Minx won it six and the BNK just once.

The championship game, which will start on Sunday, will be played across five games. The third leg is scheduled on March 23, but depending on the third game’s result, the championship could last to a fifth leg on March 27.
