Six recipients were awarded Samsung Ho-Am Prizes Thursday for their roles in physics, life sciences, engineering, medicine, arts and community service.
The ceremony was held at The Shilla Seoul in central Seoul.
The recipients include Cho Seong-jin, an award-winning pianist, Ihm Jisoon, a physicist and distinguished professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology and Choi Kyoung-shin, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Medical non-governmental organization Global Care was recognized in the community service field.
Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong attended the award ceremony.
It is his second consecutive year attending the ceremony.
The Samsung Ho-Am Prize, which was established in 1990 by Samsung’s late chairman Lee Kun-hee, recognizes talents in Korea who are considered to have made contributions in six areas ranging from math to arts.
The prize was named after the penname of Samsung founder Lee Byung-chull.
Each recipient received 300 million won ($227,000) in prize money, according to the company.
Lee Jae-yong is known to have a special affection for the award. He newly created the life science category in 2021, determining the country lacks competitiveness in the field compared to engineering and medicine.
The Samsung leader's appearance at the ceremony last year was his first in six years.
The annual award has so far recognized 170 talents and given out 32.5 billion won in prizes.
