Son tells City, Atletico to look forward to a 'special' Coupang Play Series

Son Heung-min shared his experience playing with Tottenham Hotspur in Korea last summer in a video addressed to the Manchester City and Atletico Madrid players shared on the Coupang Play website on Thursday.

Coupang Play — a streaming service owned by Korean e-commerce company Coupang — invited City and Atletico to take part in the second edition of the Coupang Play Series, an annual exhibition games series launched last year.

“I thank Manchester City and Atletico Madrid players for visiting Korea during the pre-season and I hope they could entertain a lot of Korean football fans,” Son said in the video.

Son also participated in the series with Tottenham last summer, along with La Liga team Sevilla.

“Having an opportunity to visit Korea with my teammates was special,” Son said in the video. “I was thankful and happy that I could show my teammates how much Korean fans love Tottenham and cheer for the team.

“The players talked about the fans the most.”

The popularity for the series last year was extremely high, with tickets selling out in less than a half hour.

Considering the prominence of Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, that will likely be the case again this year.

City are the English treble winners this season, while Atletico have been the strongest contender in La Liga after Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in the past decade.

Atletico will be in action in the first game of the series on July 27, when they take on Team K League, an all-star team of players drawn from the domestic K League 1. That match will take place at Seoul World Cup Stadium in Mapo District, western Seoul.

Atletico will then clash with City in the second game on July 30 at the same venue.

Tickets for the Atletico vs. K League game will go on sale at 1 p.m. on Tuesday next week, with tickets for the Man City game on sale at the same time the following day.

Tickets can only be purchased on the Coupang Play app and will be exclusively available for those who subscribe to Coupang’s Rocket Wow — a paid subscription service that offers the use of Coupang Play and free delivery for designated products and a number of other services.
