President Yoon Suk Yeol said that Korea is "ready" to share its experiences and give back to the international community in an English-language speech in Paris promoting Busan's 2030 World Expo bid on Tuesday. Yoon's trip to France came as he attended the 172nd general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) to give an English-language speech promoting Busan's bid to host the World Expo.

윤석열 대통령은 화요일(6월 20일) 프랑스 파리에서 부산의 2030 세계박람회(엑스포) 유치 홍보를 위한 영어 연설에서 한국은 국제사회와 경험을 나누고 보답할 준비가 됐다고 말했다. 윤 대통령은 국제박람회국제기구(BIE)의 172차 총회에서 엑스포 부산 유치를 홍보하기 위해 프랑스를 방문했다.

"Through the 'Busan Initiative,' Korea will share its development experiences with the international community," Yoon said at the assembly. "Korea will lead in tackling humanity's challenges."

윤 대통령은 총회에서 “‘부산 이니셔티브’를 통해 개발 경험을 국제사회와 공유하고 인류가 직면한 문제를 해결하는 데 앞장설 것”이라고 말했다.

Yoon was the last speaker of four during the 30-minute presentation by the Korean delegation, alongside other notable presenters such as Korean singer Psy, also known as Park Jai-sang, founder of entertainment agency P Nation. This marks the fourth out of five rounds of presentations, with the Paris-based 179-member BIE, the intergovernmental organization founded in 1928 that oversees the World Expo, set to make a fidnal selection by secret ballot in November.

윤 대통령은 30분간 진행된 한국 대표단 4명 중 마지막 연사였다. 가수 싸이(연예기획사 P NATION의 창업자 박재상) 등 유명한 연사들이 윤 대통령에 앞서 발표했다. 이번은 총 5차 경쟁 프레젠테이션(PT) 중 네 번째였다. 파리에 위치한 BIE는 세계박람회를 관장하기 위해 1928년 설립된 단체로 회원국은 179개 나라다. 오는 11월 비밀투표를 통해 엑스포 개최국을 최종 선정한다.

"To address humanity's urgent challenges, we must act now," Yoon said. "Busan is a gateway to the Eurasian continent.” Such issues threatening world peace and civilization include war and conflict, weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, climate change, digital divide and economic inequality endangering sustainable peace and growth of the international community. Busan is a "city of the future," Yoon said, that will become a "solutions platform addressing humanity's complex and urgent challenges" and a venue that can create new business opportunities.

윤 대통령은 “지금 우리는 인류가 당면한 도전 과제를 해결하기 위해 행동에 나서야 한다”며 “부산은 유라시아 대륙으로 진입하는 관문”이라고 말했다. 윤 대통령은 전쟁과 분규, 대량살상무기와 테러는 세계의 평화는 물론 문명의 존속 가능성마저 위협한다며 디지털 격차와 경제적 불평등은 국제사회의 지속가능한 평화와 번영을 위협하고 있다고 했다. 그러면서 부산은 “미래의 도시”라며 “인류가 당면한 복합위기에 대응하는 솔루션 플랫폼”이 될 것이고 새로운 비즈니스 기회를 창출하는 만남의 장이 될 것이라 밝혔다.

Yoon stressed Korea is fulfilling 1,258 official development assistance (ODA) projects with BIE member states, recalling the country's own recovery process after the devastating 1950-53 Korean War. "Thanks to the help of the international community, Korea transformed itself into an economic powerhouse full of high-tech industries and innovative technologies," Yoon said. "Korea wishes to give back to the international community what it has received thus far." He added that Korea is committed to providing its largest-ever assistance package for more than 110 member states.

윤 대통령은 1950~53년 참혹한 한국전쟁 이후 원조를 받던 나라였다는 것을 상기하면서 오늘날 BIE 회원국을 대상으로 1258개의 공적개발원조(ODA) 사업을 수행하고 있다고 강조했다. 윤 대통령은 “국제사회의 도움에 힘입어 첨단 산업과 혁신 기술을 가진 경제 강국으로 변모했다”며 “대한민국은 그동안 받은 것을 국제사회에 보답하고자 한다”고 말했다. 그러면서 110개 이상의 회원국에 역대 최대 규모의 지원을 약속했다.

He further stressed that Busan envisions an Expo passing on a "clean and safe earth, and sustainable peace and prosperity to future generations.”

또 부산은 미래세대에게 “깨끗하고 안전한 지구, 지속가능한 평화와 번영”을 물려주는 엑스포를 구상한다고 말했다.

Korea previously hosted other large-scale events including the 1988 Summer Olympics, the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2018 Winter Olympics. "Central and local governments, companies and citizens, all political parties, and more than 7.5 million overseas Koreans are truly united in their wish for the Busan Expo," Yoon said, emphasizing that Korea is a "qualified" candidate that is fully invested in preparations to make "the best World Expo of all time."

한국은 지금까지 1988년 하계올림픽, 2002년 월드컵, 2018년 동계올림픽 등 세계 주요 행사를 개최했다. 윤 대통령은 “중앙정부, 지방정부, 기업, 시민, 모든 정당들, 그리고 세계 각지의 750만 재외 동포가 모두 한마음으로 부산엑스포를 열망한다”고 말하며, 준비된 후보국으로 최고의 엑스포 개최 준비를 위해 완벽하게 투자해 왔다고 강조했다.

Korea is competing for the 2030 World Expo bid against Saudi Arabia's Riyadh and Italy's Rome. The Saudi Arabian and Italian delegations also gave presentations on their bids.

한국은 사우디의 리야드와 이탈리아의 로마가 2030년 세계 엑스포 개최에 경쟁하고 있다. 사우디와 이탈리아 대표단도 유치를 위해 프레젠테이션을 가졌다.

Recalling past landmark expos, Yoon said that a 2030 World Expo hosted by Busan, "will be remembered as one shifting our priority from competition to solidarity." "Busan is ready," Yoon said. "We are united. Let's transform our world and navigate toward a better future."
