Police apprehend university students who attempted to break into the Japanese Embassy in central Seoul to protest the release of treated radioactive water from the ruined Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on Thursday. [YONHAP]
Police on Thursday apprehended 16 university students after they attempted to break into the Embassy of Japan in Korea to protest the release of treated radioactive water from the ruined Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Police said the students, who were part of a civic group opposed to Japan's discharge of treated Fukushima water, tried to enter the embassy in Jung District, central Seoul, at around 1 p.m. Thursday as they held a rally to protest the release.
Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the plant, said it began releasing treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant at 1 p.m. Thursday as planned.
