The Korean women’s basketball team beat Chinese Taipei 87-59 in their last group stage game at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Sunday, reaching the quarterfinals as Group C winners with three consecutive victories.
Korea had already qualified for the knockout stage with two wins, but the game at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China turned out to be a fierce contest as Chinese Taipei went all out to be in with a chance of advancing to the knockout stage.
A total of 12 countries, divided into three groups, compete for women's basketball gold in this year’s Asiad. The top two teams from each group and two best third-place teams reach the quarterfinals.
Chinese Taipei showed a strong performance in the early going, taking the score to 5-0 and extending their lead to make it 14-7.
Korea bounced, however, and tied the score at 16-16, before turning things around to end the first quarter up 21-18.
Korea then maintained the lead through the second quarter, ending it at 45-37. The third quarter saw more aggression from Korea, with the team making it 63-48.
Chinese Taipei couldn’t seem to bounce back by that point and the game ended with an 87-59 victory for Korea.
Kim Dan-bi was the top scorer of the game, scoring 18 points alone. Jin An also managed 14 points.
The Korean women’s basketball team’s bid to win their fifth Asiad gold medal will continue in the quarterfinals. As of press time Sunday, their opponent in the knockout stage is yet to be decided.
