[KOREA METEOROLOGICAL ADMINISTRATION]

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 was reported 19 kilometers (11.8 miles) southeast of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, at 4:55 a.m., the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

The earthquake was the second-strongest to hit Korea this year. An earthquake in May reported offshore of Donghae, Gangwon, holds this year's record with a magnitude of 4.5.

Today's earthquake also struck an area close to the location of the strongest earthquake in Korea in recent years, which reported a magnitude of 5.8 on Sept. 12, 2016.

The weather agency had initially reported the earthquake to have a magnitude of 4.3. It corrected the magnitude not long after.
