Fashion retailer ShinWon joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), a corporate sustainability initiative, as part of its environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) management.

The retailer announced its intent to advance improvements in human rights, labor conditions, transparency and the environment at the agreement ceremony held by UNGC's Korean network on Friday.

The UNGC is the world’s largest corporate sustainability and social responsibility initiative, joined by more than 17,000 participants in more than 160 countries. Companies sign a nonbinding pact to pursue sustainable and socially responsible activities per the UNGC’s principle-based business framework.

ShinWon has helped more than 6,000 workers since 2018 through P.A.C.E., an education campaign to cultivate women leaders and improve working women’s quality of life at overseas production bases.

“We will incorporate the UNGC’s 10 principles [for business] throughout corporate management to promote sustainability and improve corporate citizenship,” ShinWon CEO Park Jung-joo said in a news release.

“We plan to do our best in ESG management activities and its internalization in the future,” Park added.
