Lee Sun-kyun, an actor who has been going through police questioning on suspicions of drug use, took his own life in a car parked near Waryong Park in Jongno District in central Seoul on Wednesday, the police said. Lee was best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film "Parasite." He was 48 years old.

마약 투약 혐의로 경찰 수사를 받던 영화배우 이선균 씨가 수요일 (12월 27일) 종로구 와룡공원 인근에 주차된 차량 안에서 숨진 채 발견됐다. 이씨는 오스카 상을 수상한 영화 ‘기생충’에서의 역할로 잘 알려져 있다. 향년 48세.

The police confirmed Lee's identity after searching for the actor after Lee's wife called them at 10:12 a.m. A suicide note was reportedly found at his apartment.

이씨의 아내로부터 오전 10시12분쯤 신고를 받고 수색에 나선 경찰은 이씨의 신원을 확인했다. 이씨의 자택에서 유서가 발견됐다.

He appeared before the police for three rounds of questioning since October. Lee reportedly told the police that he snorted illicit drugs with a straw.

그는 지난 10월 이후 세 차례에 걸쳐 경찰의 소환 조사를 받았다. 이씨는 경찰에 빨대를 이용해 코로 불법 마약을 흡입했다고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

The last questioning took place on Saturday. He was questioned for 19 hours. He said he was told later that the powder he snorted was a sedative by a hostess at a high-end bar in Seoul.

이씨는 지난 10월 23일 19시간 동안 마지막 소환조사를 받았다. 이씨는 강남 고급 유흥업소 실장으로부터 자신이 흡입한 약물이 수면제라고 들었다고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

The actor was among eight people who have been investigated for drug use, including the 29-year-old employee of the bar, Good Place, in Gangnam, Seoul.

경찰은 이씨를 포함하여 고급 유흥업소인 굿플레이스의 29세 실장 등 8명을 마약 투약 혐의로 조사 하고 있다.

The actor was accused of using drugs not only at the bar but also at the employee's residence. Lee tested negative for drugs both in a brief test and a lab-based test.

이씨는 유흥업소에서 뿐 아니라 유흥업소 실장 집에서 여러 차례 마약을 투약한 혐의를 받고 있다. 이씨는 간이검사와 정밀검사 모두에서 음성으로 판정됐다.

According to the police, the actor said he was duped by the employee and requested a polygraph test.

경찰에 따르면 이씨는 유흥업소 실장으로부터 속았다며 거짓말 탐지기 조사를 요청했다.

Lee also told the police that he was being blackmailed, and he gave 350 million won ($270,290) to the employee. The employee, only identified by her last name, Kim, reportedly told the actor on the phone that her phone was hacked and that a blackmailer demanded money.

이씨는 또 본인이 협박을 받았다며 유흥업소 실장한테 3억5000만원을 전달했다고 경찰에 진술했다. 유흥업소 실장 김씨는 이씨에게 자신의 핸드폰이 해킹당했다며 협박범이 돈을 요구했다고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.

Lee, who debuted in 2001 with the musical Rocky Horror Show, played major roles in popular TV shows, such as "Pasta" (2010). Lee is survived by his wife, actor Jeon Hye-jin, and his two sons.

2001년 뮤지컬 ‘록키호러쇼’로 데뷔한 이씨는 이후 2010년 방영한 TV 드라마 ‘파스타’ 등 수많은 작품에서 주요 역할을 맡았다. 유족으로는 아내인 배우 전혜진과 두 아들이 있다.

Lee's agency, HODU&U Entertainment, said, "We are deeply sorrowed and despaired," while asking the media to refrain from making speculations and spreading misinformation regarding the actor. The agency added Lee's funeral will only include the actor's family and close associates.

이씨의 소속사 호두앤유엔터테인먼트는 이날 “비통하고 참담한 심정을 가눌 길이 없다”라며 “억측이나 추측에 의한 허위사실 유포 및 이를 토대로 한 악의적인 보도는 자제해 주시길 정중히 부탁드린다”고 밝혔다. 소속사는 이씨의 장례는 유가족 및 동료들이 참석한 가운데 조용히 치러질 것이라고 전했다.
