Dramas produced by SLL JoongAng are being remade in other Asian countries as intellectual property (IP) sales were made in bulk last year, SLL JoongAng announced Tuesday.
“Reborn Rich” (2022), “Strong Girl Bong-soon” (2017), “Doctor Cha” (2023) and “King the Land” (2023), all produced by studios under SLL JoongAng, are being remade in Thailand, Malaysia and Turkey.
“Reborn Rich,” which was nominated for the International Emmy Awards last year, is being remade by Viu, the largest streaming service platform in Thailand. “Reborn Rich” recorded a 26.9 percent nationwide viewership rating when it aired in 2022.
Viu is also remaking “Strong Girl Bong-soon” for Malaysian audiences. A spinoff of the drama, “Strong Girl Nam-soon,” aired last year and was also a hit with Korean audiences.
In Turkey, production company MF Yapim is remaking both “Doctor Cha” and “King the Land.” “Doctor Cha” was one of Netflix's top 10 non-English shows for seven straight weeks, and “King the Land” raked in a total of 24.5 million hours in viewership.
“The fact that IPs of works not only in romance but also in various other genres are being exported is evidence that the excellence of content produced by SLL JoongAng is being recognized,” the production company said in a press release. “We will continue to do our best to expand the base of K-content through the development of various IPS and expansion of business.”
