Ulsan HD beat Ventforet Kofu 2-1 in the second leg of the round of 16 of the 2023-24 AFC Champions League on Wednesday, reaching the quarterfinals with a huge 5-1 win on aggregate.

울산 HD가 반포레 고후를 수요일 (2월 21일) 2023~2024 AFC 챔피언스리그 16강 2차전에서 2-1로 꺾으며 합계 점수 5-1로 8강전에 진출했다.

Ulsan went into the match at JIT Recycle Ink Stadium in Japan with a 3-0 lead from the first leg on Feb. 15.

울산은 지난 2월 15일 1차전에서의 3-0으로 이겨 우세한 상황에서 일본 JIT 리사이클 잉크 스타디움에서 열린 경기에 임했다.

Kofu put one back in the 88th minute with Kazhushi Mitsuhira scoring a header from a corner, but Ulsan had little reason for concern with a 4-1 aggregate lead.

고후는 미츠히라 카즈시가 코너킥 상황에서 후반 43분 헤딩 골을 넣으며 한 골을 만회했지만, 울산은 합계 점수 4-1로 앞서 나가고 있어 크게 걱정할 것이 없었다.

Ulsan’s Joo Min-kyu scored in injury time to end the game at 2-1 for a 5-1 win on aggregate. The goal was Joo’s third against Kofu, having scored a double in the first leg.

울산의 주민규가 추가 시간 골을 넣으며 2-1, 합계 점수 5-1로 경기를 끝냈다. 이 골은 1차전에서 멀티골을 기록한 주민규가 고후를 상대로 넣은 세 번째 골이었다.

The victory puts Ulsan up against fellow K League 1 team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the quarterfinals. For Jeonbuk, it will be another K League derby in the knockout stage, having beaten the Pohang Steelers 3-1 in the round of 16.

울산은 이날 승리로 같은 K리그1 팀 전북 현대모터스와 8강전에서 맞붙게 됐다. 전북은 16강전에서 포항 스틸러스를 상대로 3-1 승리를 거둔 뒤 또다시 토너먼트에서 K리그 더비를 치른다.

Ulsan’s successful run in the Champions League comes despite failing to dominate in the group stage like they did in the K League last year — during which the club won the league title for their firstever title defense — recording three wins, one draw and two losses to finish as Group I runners-up.

울산은 챔피언스리그 조별리그에서 3승, 1무, 2패로 I조 2위를 차지해 지난해 K리그에서 최초로 리그 우승과 함께 타이틀 방어에 성공했다. 지난해처럼 압도적인 경기력을 보여주진 못했으나 성공을 이어가고 있다.

Wednesday’s match was Ulsan’s last tune-up game before the 2024 K League 1, which begins on March 1. Ulsan will play their first league match against last season’s league runners-up Steelers at home on opening day.
