It’s the cheap fakes’ turn to shake the election (KOR)

The attacks by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s camp and conservatives to provoke concerns about 82-year-old President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline are crossing the line.
While some may say winning an election matters by any means, malicious fabrications blurring the line between truth and lies cover the eyes and ears of voters.
The conservative-leaning New York Post published a photo of President Biden leaving the June 13 G7 summit in Italy on a cover with the headline, “Meander In Chief.” A vertical video that appears to be taken with a smartphone was also posted on the internet. The video spread quickly and former President Trump’s camp aggressively used it to attack Biden.
NBC fact-checked the viral video and discovered what it hid. The footage released by NBC with a wider angle shows President Biden walking away to greet a group of parachutists, who just landed, and giving them thumbs up.
The Republican National Committee posted a 12-second video of Biden trying to sit on a chair that was not visible at a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings on June 6. Biden was mocked for attempting to sit on an invisible chair. But the Associated Press fact-checked the video and found it was a lie — from a wider angle, Biden looks at the chair in the back, then sits.
American media calls these videos “cheap fakes” made with inexpensive editing tools to distort the truth, unlike deepfakes which are made using AI. It is concerning that cheap fakes are making the November presidential election even more chaotic.
The White House also criticized such videos for being malicious. Excessive attacks deserve criticism, but it is worth thinking whether Biden’s lack of communication encouraged the risk about his old age. Trump had discord with mainstream media throughout his term, but visited the liberal New York Times (NYT) for an interview. But Biden has been avoiding interviews with the NYT. As it turned out, he turned down interviews about the Super Bowl this year after also rejecting them last year, even though they are considered the best PR opportunities for the president.
The first television debate for the U.S. presidential candidates will be held on June 27. CNN’s rules to prevent over-the-top disruptions are in place, including strictly limiting the time to speak. Is it too much for the voters to hope for a presidential debate focusing on candidates’ qualities, leadership, policy and vision?

만 82세인 조 바이든 미국 대통령의 인지력 저하 우려를 부추기기 위한 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령 측과 보수 진영의 공격이 위험수위를 넘나들고 있다. 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 이겨야 하는 게 선거라지만 진실과 거짓의 경계를 무너뜨리는 악의적 조작은 유권자의 눈과 귀를 가릴 뿐이다.
보수 성향 매체 뉴욕포스트는 바이든 대통령이 지난 13일 이탈리아에서 열린 G7 정상회의 행사 때 자리를 이탈하며 마치 정신줄을 놓은 듯한 모습의 사진을 ‘방황하는 지도자’라는 제목과 함께 1면에 실었다. 휴대폰으로 찍은 듯한 세로 영상도 인터넷에 올렸다. 영상은 삽시간에 퍼졌고 트럼프 전 대통령 측은 바이든 공격에 적극 활용했다.
하지만 NBC 방송의 팩트체크가 ‘숨어 있던 1인치’를 찾아냈다. NBC가 공개한 더 넓은 각도의 화면에는 바이든 대통령이 막 착지에 성공한 낙하산 부대원들에게 엄지를 들어 보이며 인사를 건네려 한 모습이 담겼다.
앞서 공화당 전국위원회는 지난 6일 노르망디 상륙작전 80주년 기념식에서 바이든이 의자가 보이지 않는데도 앉으려는 듯한 엉거주춤한 자세의 12초 영상을 소셜미디어에 올리며 “투명 의자에 앉고 있다”고 놀려댔다. 하지만 AP통신의 팩트체크 결과는 “거짓”이다. 더 넓은 각도의 풀샷을 보면 바이든이 뒤에 있는 의자를 살피고 잠시 후 의자에 앉는 장면이 나온다.
미 언론은 AI를 이용해 만든 딥 페이크(Deep Fake)와 달리 손쉽고 저렴한 편집 프로그램을 활용해 진상을 왜곡시킨다는 뜻에서 ‘값싼 가짜’(Cheap Fake)라 부르며 심각성을 경고하고 있다. 11월 대선을 더욱 혼탁하게 만든다는 우려다.
백악관도 “교묘하게 편집된 악의적 영상”이라고 반발한다. 선을 넘은 마타도어는 비판받아 마땅하나 바이든 대통령의 소통 부족이 고령 리스크를 키운 측면은 없지 않은지 생각할 필요도 있다. 임기 내내 주류 언론과 갈등을 빚었던 트럼프조차 진보 성향 뉴욕타임스(NYT)를 방문해 인터뷰를 했지만 바이든은 NYT 인터뷰를 계속 피하고 있다. 최고의 홍보 기회라는 미식축구 결승전 ‘슈퍼볼’ 관련 인터뷰를 지난해에 이어 올해 거부한 것도 말실수 때문 아니냐는 논란을 불렀다.
오는 27일 미 대선 후보 첫 TV 토론이 열린다. 발언 시간을 철저히 통제하는 등 막장 예방 규칙들이 동원됐다. 유권자들이 후보의 자질과 리더십, 정책ㆍ비전 제시 능력을 꼼꼼히 살피는 유익한 토론의 장이 되길 바라는 건 욕심일까.
