Police seek arrest warrant for driver in Seoul City Hall crash that killed nine
Police applied for an arrest warrant on Thursday for the driver involved in the fatal car crash near Seoul City Hall that claimed nine lives on July 1.
The Namdaemun Police Precinct said that it has applied for an arrest warrant for the 68-year-old driver, surnamed Cha, who was behind the wheel of the Genesis vehicle that caused the accident. The application for the arrest warrant comes 24 days after the crash.
Cha is suspected of causing nine deaths and seven injuries by driving the wrong way down a one-way street near Seoul City Hall. He faces charges of manslaughter under the Special Act on Traffic Accidents.
Cha has maintained during three rounds of police investigations, all conducted at hospitals where he was being treated for injuries suffered in the crash, that the vehicle suffered from sudden unintended acceleration.
“Considering the seriousness of the crime and the details of the investigation so far, we have applied for an arrest warrant for Cha around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday,” a police official from the Namdaemun Police Precinct said Thursday.
