Korean diver Shin Jung-whi failed to qualify for the men’s 10-meter platform final at the Paris Olympics Saturday, finishing the 18-man semifinal in last place at the Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis France and ending Korea’s run in the discipline at this year’s Games.
The 21-year-old fell into the bottom of the board from the start, scoring just 34.50 points with his first dive. Top divers notched marks in the high 70s up to the low 90s for individual dives.
Shin scored a total of 290.60 points over six rounds. He was the only diver who failed to score at least 300 points, recording his worst dive in the fourth round with just 27.20 points after hitting the water before he could fully straighten his legs.
But he was still the best performing Korean diver in the discipline at this year’s Games after fellow Korean diver Kim Yeong-taek, a second-time Olympian, placed 24th in the preliminary round and missed the semifinal cut. Shin placed 17th to nab one of the last spots.
And Kim Na-hyun failed to make the women’s 10-meter platform semifinals after finishing the preliminary round in 26th place out of 29 divers.
Twelve divers made the men’s 10-meter platform final on Sunday. China's Cao Yuan finished in first place, scoring 504.00 points.
