President Yoon Suk Yeol unveiled a new vision for unification with North Korea, the Unification Doctrine, during a speech in a ceremony marking the 79th Liberation Day on Thursday. Yoon emphasized that “complete liberation remains an unfinished task” as the peninsula still remains divided. The pledge, however, was overshadowed by the extreme conflict within the Korean political landscape. Opposition parties and lawmakers boycotted the government‘s Liberation Day ceremony for the first time in history in protest of the appointment of a new national independence museum chief.
