Ministry to forgive a cell phone fee

Korea will exempt airwave fees for mobile phone subscribers who have been unable to meet the payment for five years or longer to relieve their financial burden. About 2.06 million mobile phone subscribers who signed up before April 2004 will be affected, the Ministry of Information and Communication said in a statement yesterday. The total amount of airwave fees to be exempted stands at 18 billion won ($17 million), the ministry said. The measure will become effective next week. Since 1993, the ministry has collected a certain amount from new mobile phone users as “airwave usage fees.”
