Taxi fares to rise, but service improvements promisedThe basic taxi fare in Seoul will rise to 3,800 won ($3.40) starting at 4 a.m. on Feb. 16, the city government said Wednesday.
That is an 800-won increase. The rise comes roughly five years after the last adjustment in October 2013, when the basic fare went from 2,400 won to 3,000 won.
For the basic fare, a taxi drives roughly 2 kilometers (1.24 miles).
Late-night fares will increase by 1,000 won to 4,600 beginning the same day.
Basic fares for higher-end deluxe taxis will be adjusted to 6,500 won, up 1,500 won from the current price.
According to the city government, the Seoul Private Taxi Association recently submitted plans to improve services in line with the fare increase. The plans include a rule against refusing passengers and increasing the supply of available taxis late at night, when demand soars.
