Kava kava products are selling in Korea
Three U.S. products containing elements from a toxic plant, kava kava, were found to have been distributed via online and pyramid sales, Korea Consumer Protection Board announced on Tuesday.The board asked the Food and Drug Administration to recall all the products and prohibit further sales of kava kava products.
All three products were developed by Pharmanex, a U.S. pharmaceutical company, the board said, adding that it did not yet know how the products were brought into Korea.
Kava kava, a plant that inhabits islands of the South Pacific, is known to be effective in relieving pain and anxiety. But long-term consumption may cause addiction and intestinal damage, as well as respiratory failure and skin allergy.
