Korea Elevator Safety Agency officials on Tuesday disassemble the escalator that malfunctioned and injured 10 people on Monday during the morning rush hour at Gyeongbokgun Station in central Seoul. Two of the injured were taken to hospital.
Seoul Metro said on Thursday that 578 escalators among the 1,827 at Seoul's subway stations were built at least 20 years ago and have yet to be replaced. Escalator components are required to be replaced every 15 to 20 years.
An escalator suddenly went into reverse at a subway station on the Bundang Line in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, injuring 14 people on Thursday morning.
Some 14 people were reported to have been injured from an escalator accident at Sunae Station on the Bundang Line in Gyeonggi.
