Traffic Volume Recovers

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation announced on September 6 that traffic volume has recovered to pre-IMF bailout levels. The average daily volume of Namsan Tunnels 1 and 3 increased from 74,000 to 77,000 along with the reduction in gas prices. In Pusan, the volume of toll road traffic recovered from 186,000 to 210,000.
Meanwhile, the average speed of cars in urban areas has increased due to newly opened subways. The speed at which buses traveled increased on average from 18.35 km per hour in 1996 to 18.69 km per hour in 1997. The average speed in Kwangju was 30.85 km per hour, followed by 28.7 km (Ulsan), 24.01 km (Pusan), 23.50 km (Taejun), 18.68 km (Taegu), and 16.85 km (Seoul).
