Big Change in Taxi Fare System

Taxi fares will change to more along the lines of advanced countries' systems in 1999. The extra charge added at night will be extended two hours more and a new charge system to calculate fares per individual will be implemented. The basic rate will be changed from the existing 1,300 won per 2 km to 700 won to 1 km.
The Ministry of Construction and Traffic (MOCT) plans to confirm the new taxi fare system during the first half of 1999. The extra charge time at night will be from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The fare will rise from 100 won per 210 m to 100 won per 167 m.
Until now, the fare is the same regardless of the number of passengers. According to the new system, fares will be the same for two passengers but if there are more than two passengers, 500 won per person will be additionally charged. Any baggage needed to be carried in a taxi's trunk will be charged 1,000 won.
Additionally, the handicapped and people over 65 will benefit with a 20% discount. A source at the MOCT said, 'Fares will increase by 2.7%. But, short distance passengers will benefit from the new system.'
