Rice Consumption Decreased After IMF Bailout

Rice consumption has decreased since Korea entered under the management of the IMF in late 1997.
Instead, consumption of 'Ramyeon', a popular noodle and broth combination, has increased. Low income earners consumed more Ramyeon because it is cheaper than rice.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries(MOAF), on January 24, annual consumption of rice per capita decreased last year by 0.8kg to 99.8 kg compared to 100.6 kg in 1997.
Whereas, Ramyeon sales in 1998 increased by 16.5 percent to 1.0966 trillion won compared to 941.1 billion won in 1997.
