SMSC Union Calls for Strike in Mid-April

The labor union of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation(SMSC) is likely to go on a strike in mid- April.
SMSC's union announced on March 26 that it will go on a strike to protest SMSC's restructuring proposals that among other things calls for a cut of 2070 employees, 18.1 percent of its total workforce.
Sok Chi Soon, the union's leader, held an interview with reporters, and said that if the labor union's demands are not accepted, it will go on strike with the support of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) from mid-April to early May.
He requested Seoul authorities to accept three demands: a halt to restructuring, reduction of working hours, and the subway corporation's reform.
Union officials ordered 6000 members to attend a protest rally held by the KCTU on March 27 in front of Chongmyo, the Royal Ancestors' Shrine.
Protesters stated that if Seoul authorities do not negotiate with the labor union, it will decide on a general strike at the union's general meeting on April 7.
