British Telecom Pours Enormous Money into Asia
United Kingdom's British Telecom(BT) will annually invest 1.6 billion dollars in the Asian market from 1999 for years.The world's 3rd biggest telecommunications company is planning to focus especially on Korea, China and Japan.
BT chairman Peter Bonfield said in an interview on April 14, ' The Asian sector will seize 60 percent of the world telecommunications market by 2003. Projections indicate the Asian market will grow to eclipse Europe in a few years.'
He also mentioned , 'We will advance into China in partnership with Korea's LG Telecom.'
BT was privatized in the 1984 restructuring program resulted in the downsizing of the company by 120,000 employees. It recorded total sales of 23 billion dollars in 1998 which is only surpassed by American AT&T and NTT of Japan.
