Government Versus Labor Showdown Approaches

There is a possiblity of a serious confrontation between the government and labor unions.
As the international day for labor, May Day, approaches, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) declared that it would gather a massive congregation on May 1 to force the government's surrender on its restructuring movement.
On the other hand, the government resolutely made it clear that it will not look the other way on illegal strikes and promised a stern response awaits those who engage in such strikes that jeopardize the nation's restructuring.
It feels that a May Day struggle, in particular, could heighten social unrest as unions mobilize poor people, farmers, and students.
Korea Telecom's labor union held a rally at Yongsan Station in Seoul on April 25 and decided on a general strike beginning tomorrow.
A source from KCTU asserted, 'Unless the government retreats from its policy to forcefully stop our struggle, we will keep enlarging the size of the fight.'
