Prosecution Plans to Confiscate 35 Billion Won from Former President Roh

The prosecution plans to forcibly collect 35 billion won in outstanding fines imposed on former President Roh Tae Woo.
The Seoul District Prosecutor's Office announced on May 9 that it applied to the Seoul High Prosecutor's Office for permission to confiscate 35.9 billion won in hidden money. Prosecutors have disclosed that Roh lent 23 billion won to a relative by marriage and that he gave a further 12.9 billion won to his brother for safekeeping.
District prosecuters will directly apply to the court upon receiving successive permission by the Seoul High Prosecutor's Office, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office, and the Ministry of Justice.
According to the Civil Proceedings Act, a direct application is accepted unless the debtor files an appeal.
Roh was originally fined 262.8 billion won for corruption and bribery, and if the prosecutors' motion is executed, Roh's uncollected fines will be reduced to 42.5 billion won.
Another former president, Chun Doo Hwan, currently has outstanding fines amounting to 189.2 billion won.
