Kim to Visit Russia and Mongolia

Park Ji Won, official spokesperson for the Blue House(Chong Wa Dae), on May 16, announced that President Kim Dae Jung will visit Russia and Mongolia from May 27 to June 1.
Kim was invited by Russian President Boris Yeltsin. It will mark the first time in five years for a Korean president to visit Russia.
Kim is known to have requested active support for his 'Sunshine Policy' on North Korea from Yeltsin. At their summit meeting, he will also ask for strengthening Korea and Russia's relationship, which in turn should achieve more peaceful relations on the Korean Peninsula.
President Kim will also meet with Russian opposition politicians, religious leaders, and the mayor of Moscow.
As an honorary professor, Kim will deliver an address at Moscow University on the Korean-Russian friendship vision for the 21st century.
In another significant state visit, the president's visit to Mongolia will be a first for a Korean leader since official diplomatic relations were established, and both countries' leaders will sign an extradition treaty for the exchange of criminals.
Along with the president, about 80 business leaders will also follow to promote better mutual economic cooperation.
