GNP Pushes Early Repatriation for S Korean War Prisoners

Hoping that the improvement in inter-Korean relations will boost their cause, the opposition Grand National Party is pushing for an early repatriation of prisoners of war and kidnapped South Koreans in North Korea. Kang Sam-jae, GNP chairman of a special committee for Korean War prisoners and South Korean kidnapees, will present the proposal to the National Assembly on August 23,

Kang said at a special committee meeting that the government should return communist prisoners to the North on the condition that North Korea repatriates Korean War prisoners and kidnapped South Koreans. He added that there should be definite measures drafted at the second inter-Korean ministerial talks to locate South Koreans in the Stalinist state, reunite them with their families in the south and ultimately arrange for their repatriation.
