Mobile phone subsidies in store
Beginning in late April, mobile phone service companies will be allowed to subsidize new customers’ purchases of mobile handsets, the Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday. According to a ministry official, the amount of the subsidies allowed has not been determined yet, but he said LG TeleCom Ltd. and KTF Co. would be allowed to give larger subsidies than SK Telecom, the market leader. Industry analysts said it is likely SK Telecom would be limited to subsidizing roughly 100,000 won ($84) of a handset purchase. LG TeleCom and KTF would likely be able to offer new customers 5-10 percent more, the analysts said.
