Team reports liver protein find
Lee Jae-woon, a professor of biosciences at Pohang University of Science and Technology, said yesterday that his research team has discovered a protein that controls cholesterol and fat metabolism. The research team found for the first time in the world that a protein, called ASC-2, plays a critical role in what the liver does with cholesterol and fat, Mr. Lee said. When the metabolism of fat and cholesterol are artificially suppressed in mice, they develop liver damage, he said. Mr. Lee said the discovery will contribute to the treatment of geriatric diseases, such as high blood pressure.
