Prime Minister Goh Kun, right, toured the U.S. 2d Infantry Division’s headquarters at Camp Red Cloud yesterday, accompanied by Major General John Wood, the division’s commander. The camp is located in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi province. Mr. Goh addressed U.S. troops there, thanking them for helping to maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula, and vowed to strengthen the U.S.-South Korea alliance. Mr. Goh stressed that the 2d Infantry Division and South Korean soldiers serve as a front-line partnership to defend South Korea. He promised Seoul’s full support for the troops’ continued presence in the area, indirectly voicing the government’s objections to a U.S. proposal to relocate the division and the bulk of its other troops in Korea further south. Mr. Goh is the first prime minister to visit the 2d Infantry Division’s command headquarters. He was accompanied on his visit by Minister of National Defense Cho Young-kil. [AP]
