Park wins 400-meter freestyle gold at Worlds

Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan, 22, won the gold medal in men’s 400-meter freestyle at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai yesterday, beating his rival Sun Yang of China by more than a second.

At the Oriental Sports Center, Park finished the 400-meter race with a time of 3 minutes 42.04 seconds, while the 19-year-old Yang clocked in at 3 minutes 43.24 seconds. Defending champion and current world record holder Paul Biedermann of Germany took third at 3 minutes 44.14 seconds.

Park’s time was not fast enough to break the world record of 3 minutes 40.07 seconds or his personal best of 3 minutes 41.53 seconds but it was still a solid comeback for him since he failed to win a single medal at the Worlds in Rome two years ago. He didn’t even get into the finals after finishing 12th in the qualifying race at 3 minutes 46.04 seconds.

“I feel a bit bad that I didn’t break the [world] record, but it was a good experience for me before the London Olympics,” Park told Yonhap News Agency after yesterday’s race. “I will try to break the record at a future event.”

Park was first out of the gate yesterday, with a reaction time of 0.67 seconds. From there, he was the leader until the 200-meter mark, when Yannick Agnel of France took over.

But at 300 meters, Park recaptured his lead and held on all the way until the end of the race.

Before race time, there were concerns that Park would not win because he had barely reached the final. He looked shaky in the qualifiers, finishing seventh overall to eke out a place for himself in the eight-man final race.

During the qualifying round, Park finished with a time of 3 minutes 46.74 seconds. Not only did that cast doubt on his chances in the final, it meant he would have to start in the first lane while his rivals enjoyed the advantage of starting in the middle lanes.

For Park, it was not a good set up because the currents generated by swimmers hitting the wall as they turn filter into the first lane, creating greater water resistance.

The former World and Olympic champion admitted before the 400-meter final that the starting lane could be an important factor.

“Swimming in the middle has its advantages, but I think racing in the side lane has its own advantages as well,” Park told Yonhap after the qualifier.

In any case, he said, “This will be the first time I’ll swim in the No. 1 lane at an international event.”

But in winning his second gold medal at Worlds, Park reaffirmed his command of the 400-meter freestyle.

Park won his first 400-meter freestyle gold at the world championships in Melbourne, Australia, four years ago. He was the also top finisher in the event at the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 Asian Games.

After falling flat in Rome, Park was looking for a comeback in Shanghai and had recently started to regain his form. He won three gold medals at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California last month, when he was the top finisher in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter freestyle races.

To prepare for Worlds, Park has been working with Australian coach Michael Bohl to improve his turns and underwater swimming techniques.

His training regimen seemed to have made a difference in yesterday’s race. Park was able to extend his underwater swimming distance to about 12 meters with a stronger dolphin kick. Park’s underwater swimming distance was about 7.5 meters at last year’s Asian Games, only half of the distance allowed for underwater swimming.

Park will try to collect his second gold of the tournament in the men’s 200-meter freestyle, for which he will have to qualify today. The 200-meter final begins tomorrow at 7 p.m. Korea Standard Time. His final race - the 100-meter freestyle - will be on Thursday.

역시 박태환(22·단국대)이었다. 그는 이번에도 단순한 우승이 아니라 ‘드라마 같은 금메달’을 만들어 냈다.

　박태환은 24일 중국 상하이 오리엔탈 스포츠센터에서 열린 2011년 세계수영연맹(FINA) 세계선수권대회 남자 자유형 400m 결승에서 3분42초04로 가장 먼저 터치패드를 찍었다. 개인 최고기록(3분41초53)에는 미치지 못했지만 시상대 맨 윗자리를 차지하기에는 충분했다. 쑨양(중국)이 3분43초24로 2위, 파울 비더만(독일)이 3분44초14로 3위를 기록했다.

　박태환은 이날 오전 벌어진 예선에서 3분46초74의 저조한 기록으로 7위에 그쳤다. 박태환은 예선에서 ‘경쟁이 치열한 맨 가운데 레인을 피하자’는 작전으로 경기하기는 했지만 다른 선수들이 예상보다 좋은 성적을 내는 바람에 7위에 그치자 다소 당황하는 모습이었다. 그러나 예선에서의 계산착오가 오히려 드라마를 만들었다.

　◆상식을 뒤엎은 ‘반전 레이스’=박태환은 경기 후 “사실 예선 후에 레인 배정 받고 아찔했다. 결승 앞두고 좀 불안했다”고 털어놓았다. 그러나 결승에서 그는 경쟁자를 신경 쓰지 않은 채 혼자만의 페이스 조절에 몰두했다. 그는 평소 인터뷰에서 “누군가를 이기기 위해 수영하는 게 아니다. 기록을 목표로 한 나 자신과의 싸움”이라고 말했다. 이 말 그대로 박태환은 1번 레인에서 자신만의 리듬에 맞춰 헤엄쳤다. 마치 세계 최강 한국 쇼트트랙이 치열한 몸싸움이 벌어지는 인코스 대신 폭발적인 스피드를 앞세워 아웃코스로 경쟁자를 추월했던 것과 같은 창의적인 작전이었다. 스피드에 대한 자신감 없이는 불가능하다. 박태환은 “다른 선수들이 워낙 멀리 떨어져 있어서 보이지도 않았고, 안 봤다”고 했다.

　◆창의적인 레이스 ‘짜릿한 금’=박태환은 2007년 멜버른(호주) 세계선수권대회 자유형 400m에서 대역전극을 쓰면서 파란을 일으켰다. 당시 18세였던 그는 350m 지점을 4위로 턴하고도 마지막 50m에서 세 명을 따라잡고 우승했다. 일본의 수영전문잡지 스위밍매거진은 “폭발적인 스퍼트가 마치 전설적인 경주마를 보는 듯했다”고 표현했다.

　2008년 베이징 올림픽 자유형 400m에서는 막판 스퍼트를 경계하던 경쟁자들의 허를 찔렀다. 박태환은 초반부터 치고 나가 2위 장린(중국)을 0.58초 차로 제치고 금메달을 거머쥐었다. 그는 2009년 로마(이탈리아) 세계선수권대회 때 자유형 400m 결승행에 실패하면서 무너졌지만 2010년 광저우 아시안게임 3관왕(자유형 100·200·400m)에 오르면서 기적처럼 부활했다. 이번 상하이 대회에서는 1번 레인에서 뛰고도 1위를 차지했다. 이처럼 매번 짜릿한 재미를 주는 레이스를 하는 이유에 대해 그는 “재미있었다니 다행이다. 하지만 나는 아찔했다”고 말했다.

　◆2012 런던 올림픽 청신호=이번 금메달로 박태환은 내년 런던 올림픽에 대한 자신감을 얻었다. 내년에 박태환은 만 23세가 되며, ‘수영 황제’ 마이클 펠프스(미국)가 베이징 올림픽에서 8관왕에 오를 때 나이도 23세였다. 수영 선수로서 전성기라고 할 수 있는 나이다.

　박태환은 기술적으로 자신의 페이스를 자유자재로 조절할 수 있는 경지에 이르렀다. 게다가 지난해부터 마이클 볼(호주) 코치의 지도를 받기 시작한 후 “수영이 재미있어졌다”고 말할 정도로 정신적인 안정감도 되찾았다. 박태환은 이날 우승 후 “기록이 아쉽다. 우승 세리머니를 하려고 했는데, 이 기록에 세리머니 하면 안 될 것 같았다”고 여유 있게 농담을 했다. 박태환은 25일 자유형 200m 예선과 준결승에 나선다.

베이징 올림픽 8관왕 마이클 펠프스와 대결할 가능성이 크다. 펠프스는 23일 기자회견에서 “지난해보다 몸 상태도 좋아졌고 빠른 기록을 내고 있다”며 자신감을 나타냈다. 펠프스는 이번 대회 개인 종목은 자유형 200m, 접영 100·200m, 개인혼영 400m에 출전한다. 박태환은 예선 8조에, 펠프스는 7조에 배정됐다.
