Warming up to a layered look : A creative approach to styling is the hottest trend this winter

Perhaps that is why designers have begun stressing the importance of styling this season, rather than producing this winter’s “it” item. The key skill needed in styling your old clothes like they are new is understanding how to mix and match. It’s no longer about “what to wear,” but “how to wear.”
The trends of a particular season are easy to see while walking through a department store. Mannequins in every store will be wearing the “it” item of the season, whether it be an oversized coat or a faux fur jacket. But this winter, there seem to be more than one of these “it” items - in other words, there’s no one mega-trend that can define what’s hot this season. Fashionistas who enjoy discovering new items and setting trends seem to be focused on how to style better than others.
“Young fashionistas today want to express their identity through styling rather than just showing off the latest trends,” says Kang Min-ju, creative director of 10 Corso Como, a popular select fashion store in Cheongdam, southern Seoul, insisting that depending on how you style your clothes, they can give off a totally different look.
The recent revival of Italian luxury brand Gucci is all thanks to its new creative director Alessandro Michele, who’s been showing off innovative ways of restyling Gucci since 2015. Instead of displaying yet another look of Gucci’s signature slim-fit and modern design, Michele took a brave turn and decided to dress the models in unconventional ways by mixing colorful and extravagant shirts and pants with awkwardly large coats for the 2015 Fall/Winter collection. Michele’s novel and brave styling were hailed by bigwigs in the fashion industry, giving him a new nickname, “the curator of styling.”
Since then, fashion brands started to put out their own unique ways of styling and it seems like the mold of fashion has been broken ever since. In fashion-friendly cities like New York, Paris and Seoul, if you think wearing pants underneath a skirt is weird, you are not a fashionista.
“If you look at the items worn by the fashion models on runways for this winter, they are all familiar items, but styled differently by breaking that frame of fashion, giving a new look to familiar clothes,” said Jeong Min-ju, director of Intrend, a fashion PR firm. “So it’s becoming more common for designers to style their own clothes rather than hiring a stylist to create a unique look that speaks the brand’s philosophy,” Jeong said, adding that the two young Korean designers of the label Blindness, who were named Best Designers by foreign buyers at this fall’s Hera Seoul Fashion Week, are the perfect example.
“Their brand grabbed attention for showing off far-out stylings of their designs,” Jeong added. “They did not receive help with the styling and that’s what makes them unique.”

There’s no better season to really show off your layering skills than winter. Rather than wearing just a simple sweater and a thick jacket, why not put on several thin layers before putting on a coat or jacket? Thanks to the oversize coats in vogue this season, fitting into your outerwear while wearing several layers is no longer a problem.
One of the popular ways of layering under an oversize coat is quite retro - wearing a black turtleneck under a dress shirt.
“When oversize coats first became popular, people simply enjoyed wearing large clothes, but now, they are creating different looks by wearing something unique inside,” said stylist Suh Soo-kyoung. “When slim-fit coats were in style about three or four years ago, people could only wear a thin sweater inside in order to not look bloated, but thanks to the oversize coats, people can be more creative.”

“Layering more than two pieces of clothing has been a common styling method in the West, but only came to Korea recently because Korean celebrities began styling that way,” said Park Man-hyeon, a stylist.

Stylists say it is dangerous to just layer anything you have in the name of fashion. One popular formula of layering this season, according to fashion insiders, is “check plus check,” meaning that you should try to match similar patterns, a checkered sweater and check-patterned pants. It used to be a big fashion no-no to wear the same pattern from top and bottom, but now, it’s considered stylish.
“However, you do have to control the dynamics,” says Lee Su-jin, a designer at a.t.corner. “If you are wearing a bold-checked sweater, it will be better to match it with a thin-checked coat, for example.”
Another popular layering of items on catwalks are hoodies with maxi dresses. Hoodies are also one of the hottest items this winter, as many trendsetters make full use of them by wearing buttoned shirts under a hoodie or even another hoodie inside a larger hoodie.
How does the maxi dress come in? Wear it under a large hoodie for a feminine look. It’s better to complete the look by wearing high boots for both warmth and style.
If you are a layering beginner, stylists recommend making good use of dress shirts this winter. Wear it outside a turtleneck, inside a hoodie, or outside a maxi dress, and you’ll never go wrong.

뭘 살까 묻지 말고 어떻게 입을지 고민하라
“더 이상 새로운 옷은 없다.”
사람 머리에서 나올 수 있는 디자인은 이미 모두 나와 더는 새로운 걸 만들어낼 수 없는 지경에 이르렀단 의미로 패션업계에서 종종 쓰이는 말이다. 그래서일까. 그 시즌에 꼭 사야하는 ‘잇(it) 아이템’ 대신 이젠 모두들 '잇 스타일'을 얘기한다. 비단 옷 뿐만 아니라 가방과 신발 등 그야말로 모든 패션 아이템을 믹스매치하는 '입는 법'이 중요해졌다는 얘기다. 자, 이제 '무엇'을 입을지 고민하지 말고 '어떻게' 입을지, 제대로 된 고민을 하자.
메가 트렌드 사라진 시대
복고, 오버사이즈, 스트리트패션, 애슬레저…. 올 겨울 트렌드라며 패션 매거진에, 또 백화점 쇼윈도에 등장하는 것들이 너무나 많다. 한 마디로 간단하게 정의내릴 수 있는 메가 트렌드가 없기에 벌어지는 현상이다. 오죽하면 트렌드가 없는 게 트렌드라는 얘기까지 나올까.
그렇다 보니 이제 패션계의 화두는 잇 아이템 찾기에서 스타일링으로 넘어갔다. 패션편집숍 10꼬르소꼬모·비이커의 강민주 크리에이티브 디렉터는 “요즘 사람들은 최신 트렌드를 보여주면서도 자신의 아이덴티티를 표현하고 싶어한다”고 말한다. 남들이 다 입고 드는 옷이나 가방을 들 때조차 스스로의 개성을 드러내고 싶어하니 자연스레 스타일링이 중요해졌다는 얘기다. 실제로 같은 옷이라도 어떻게 조합해서 입느냐에 따라 완전히 다른 옷이 되기도 한다. 또 남들이 미처 하지 않은 참신한 조합을 보여줬을 때 뛰어난 패션 감각으로 칭송받기가 더 쉽다.
전 크리에이티브 디렉터 프리다 지아니니가 떠난 이후 바닥으로 떨어졌던 구찌의 부활 역시 2015년 새로 부임한 알레산드로 미켈레의 획기적인 스타일링 덕이었다. 2015년 가을겨울 컬렉션에서 미켈레는 구찌가 기존에 보여왔던 몸에 잘 맞도록 깔끔하게 재단한 고급스러운 옷 대신 다른 선택을 했다. 커다랗고 화려한 꽃무늬나 프릴·리본 장식이 가득 달린 블라우스 위에 어색할 정도로 큰 재킷을 입히는 등 벼룩시장이나 빈티지숍에서 구해온 것처럼 보이는 옷을 모델에게 섞어 입혔다.
과연 이게 먹힐까 싶지만 결과는 대성공. 쇼가 끝난 후 패션 관계자들로부터 엄청난 박수 갈채를 받았고 영화 ‘악마는 프라다를 입는다’의 모델인 전 미국 보그 편집장 안나 윈투어는 "잊고 있었던 패션의 즐거움을 찾아줬다"라고 호평했다. 이후 미켈레는 '스타일의 큐레이터'라 불리며 단숨에 패션계를 움직이는 거물로 올라섰다. 여기에 기다란 소매에 오버사이즈 코트, 어마어마하게 넓은 통의 바지를 셔츠나 후드티와 섞어 입힌 베트멍까지 가세하자 공식처럼 여겨졌던 기존의 점잖은 스타일링 법은 식상해졌다.
틀을 깨는 스타일링은 올 겨울 극에 치달았다. 디올은 남성복 쇼에서 남색 정장 슈트 위에 짧막한 녹색 터틀넥 스웨터를 덧입혔고, 스트리트 무드에 흠뻑 젖어 있는 발렌시아가와 디스퀘어드2 쇼에서는 셔츠·니트·후드티·패딩을 한꺼번에 몇 개씩 겹쳐 입은 모델이 등장했다. 버버리는 몸에 딱 달라붙는 니트 조끼 안에 여러 가지 컬러가 조합된 커다란 스웨터나 속이 살짝 비치는 비닐로 된 블라우스를 입히고, 가느다란 스트랩 샌들에는 두툼한 등산 양말을 신겨 눈길을 끌었다. 꼼데가르송 출신으로 '사카이'라는 브랜드를 하고 있는 일본 디자이너 아베 치토세는 흔히 코트 위에 점퍼를 덧입는 방법을 뒤집어 커다란 패딩과 항공점퍼 위에 단정한 울 코트를 덧입히고 점퍼의 길쭉한 소매를 코트 밖으로 길게 빼내는 스타일을 선보였다.
패션전문 홍보회사 인트렌드 정민주 이사는 “아이템 하나하나를 따져보면 우리가 평소에 흔히 입는 일상복이지만 틀을 깨는 디자이너 고유의 스타일링을 통해 새로운 패션으로 살아났다”고 위에 언급한 컬렉션들을 평했다. 그렇다보니 과거처럼 스타일리스트를 따로 두고 협업하는 대신 스타일링까지 디자이너가 도맡는 사례가 점점 늘고 있다. 지난 10월 헤라서울패션위크에서 해외 바이어들이 뽑은 ‘베스트 디자이너’로 선정된 ‘블라인드니스’의 신규용·박지선 디자이너 역시 “스타일링은 절대 남에게 맡기지 않는다”고 말했다. 이제 스타일링은 디자이너에게 의상 그 자체만큼이나 새로운 패션을 보여주는 중요한 영역이 됐다는 의미였다.
오버사이즈 코트 안에 겹쳐 입기
그렇다면 어떻게 스타일링해야할까. 앞서 말한 내로라하는 브랜드들이 내놓은 스타일링을 살펴보면 해답을 찾을 수 있다. 겹쳐 입기, 바로 ‘레이어링’이다. 특히 남녀 구분을 없앤 젠더리스(genderless) 룩이나 기괴할만큼 커다랗고 길고 뒤틀어진 옷을 표현하는 방식으로 레이어링을 적극적으로 활용한다. 사실 레이어링은 유명 디자이너의 컬렉션보다 거리에서 더 활발하게 등장한다. 소위 '옷 좀 입는다'는 패션 고수들은 공식처럼 여겨지는 스타일링 대신에 자신만의 색깔로 레이어링해 패션 감각을 뽐낸다.
추운 날씨때문에 옷을 많이 껴 입게 되는 겨울 패션으로는 이만한 스타일링 법이 없다. 두꺼운 아우터 하나를 입는 것보다 여러 개의 얇은 옷을 레이어링하면 패션감각을 뽐낼 수 있는 것만이 아니라 보온성을 높이면서 일교차에 따라 효과적으로 대처할 수 있다. 한정된 아이템으로 다양한 스타일을 만들어낼 수 있다는 것과 그렇게 만들어진 스타일이 더 멋스럽다는 것 또한 빼놀 수 없는 장점이다.
올 겨울 유독 레이어링이 강조되고 있는 배경에는 ‘오버사이즈’라는 든든한 울타리가 있다. 몇 해간 슬금슬금 커지던 옷은 올 봄에 열린 발렌시아가·베트멍·알렉산더 맥퀸 등의 2017년 가을겨울 컬렉션을 정점으로 극에 달했다. 특히 코트와 패딩은 어마어마한 사이즈로 크고 길어져 그 안에 많은 옷을 껴 입을 수 있는 환경을 마련했다. 서수경 스타일리스트는 “오버사이즈가 처음 등장했을 때만해도 큰 옷을 입는 것 자체만을 즐겼는데 시간이 지나면서 큰 옷을 예쁘게도 입고 싶어한다”며 “3~4년 전만해도 몸에 딱 맞는 아우터가 인기라 안에 얇은 스웨터 한 장 입는 것 말고는 방법이 없었는데, 아우터가 커지니 새롭고 다양한 스타일링을 시도할 수 있다”고 말했다. 외투가 넉넉하니 안에 입는 옷도 자유롭게 여러 가지 옷을 겹쳐 입어 멋을 낸다는 이야기다.
또 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 통해 옷 잘입는 셀러브리티(셀럽)나 인플루언서의 스타일을 보고 따라하면서 '레이어링해야 스타일리시하다'는 분위기가 조성된 영향도 있다. 박만현 스타일리스트는 "해외에서 흔한 레이어링을 한동안 한국에선 잘 시도하지 않았는데 김나영·변정수·하연수처럼 옷 잘입는 셀럽들이 SNS에 이런 스타일을 반복해서 보여주면서 일반에게까지 확산됐다"고 말했다. 예컨대 1990년대 스타일을 연상하게 하는 검정 터틀넥 스웨터 위에 셔츠를 입고 그 위에 체크 코트를 입거나 슬립 드레스 위에 반팔 티셔츠나 후드티를 입는 식의 스타일들이다.
경량 패딩은 일반인도 어렵지 않게 레이어링에 도전할 수 있는 아이템이다. 유니클로를 시작으로 올해는 대부분의 SPA브랜드와 스포츠브랜드에서 경량 패딩을 대거 선보였다. 코트 안에 경량 패딩을 하나 더 입거나 아예 패딩 위에 패딩 조끼를 겹쳐 입는 '패딩+패딩' 스타일도 제안되고 있다.
체크+체크는 레이어링 모범답안
레이어링이 유행이라고 그냥 옷 여러 벌을 껴 입으면 될까. 물론 답은 ‘아니오’다. 맥락 없이 무작정 껴입는 옷 차림은 곤란하다. 디자이너들이 보여준 레이어링 스타일에는 자신이 보여주고자 하는 분명한 코드가 있다. 버버리의 크리에이티브 디렉터 크리스토퍼 베일리는 영국의 전통적인 체크 패턴과 비닐 소재, 니트를 섞어 버버리에 젊은 감각을 부여하고자 했다. 구찌의 미켈레는 과거라면 ‘패션 테러리스트’란 말을 들었을만큼 괴짜스러운 너드(Nerd·따분한 공붓벌레) 룩을 통해 히피의 저항정신을 표현했다.
그렇다고 해서 너무 심각하게 생각할 필요는 없다. 자신이 표현하고 싶은 게 뭔지를 가볍게라도 생각해보고 어떻게 입을 지를 결정하면 된다. 복고풍으로 꾸미고 싶다면 터틀넥·셔츠·코트류를, 스트리트 감성을 보여주고 싶다면 후드티를 원피스나 셔츠 등과 매치하는 식으로 접근한다. 세련돼 보일 수 있는 규칙을 찾자면 ‘믹스 앤 매치’가 방향을 잡아준다. 서로 다른 컬러나 소재, 상반된 무드의 옷을 섞어 입는 방법이다. 예컨대 제일 안에 노란색 스웨터를 입었다면 그 위에 입는 카디건, 패딩, 코트의 색을 다 다르게 조합해 입거나 여성스러운 하늘하늘한 시폰 소재 스커트를 입고 그 위에는 복실복실하고 두툼한 터틀넥 스웨터 데님 재킷, 터프한 이미지의 바이크 재킷을 입는 식이다.
이번 시즌 패션업계에서 최고로 꼽는 레이어링 공식은 '체크 앤 체크'다. 말 그대로 체크 무늬가 들어간 아이템끼리 섞어 입는 방식이다. 예전같으면 절대 해서는 안 되는 스타일링이었지만 올해는 기본을 깬 스타일이 가장 세련된 스타일링으로 추앙받고 있다. 스웨터에 조끼, 바지, 코트 등 두 가지 이상을 체크로 입는 스타일이다. 이수진 앳코너 디자인실장은 "체크를 섞어 입을 때는 패턴의 강약을 조절해야한다"며 "상의나 하의 하나를 무늬없는 것으로 입으면 레이어링이 쉬워진다"고 조언했다.
그 다음으로 눈여겨 봐야할 것은 후드티와 맥시 드레스다. 후드티는 올 겨울 가장 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있는 아이템이다. 후드티 안에 셔츠나 티셔츠 또다른 후드티를 겹쳐 입고 코트, 패딩을 겉에 입는다. 이때 두툼하고 큰 후드를 밖으로 빼내 입어야 멋스럽다. 맥시 드레스는 여성스러움을 부각시키면서 몸을 가늘고 길어 보일 수 있게 만들어 주는 레이어링 아이템이다. 안에 얇은 터틀넥 스웨터와 판타롱 바지를 입고 그 위에 입거나 원피스를 먼저 입고 그 위에 후드티와 패딩을 입는 방법도 있다. 이때 신발은 무릎 위까지 올라오는 싸이 하이 부츠를 신어야 보온성과 멋을 다 챙길 수 있다.
다 자신 없다면 사실 딱 셔츠 한 벌만 있어도 멋스러운 레이어링을 할 수 있다. 터틀넥이나 후드티, 원피스 위에 입거나 거꾸로 그 안에 입는다. 체크 셔츠라면 코트 안에 입고 코트 소매 함께 소매단을 접어 올려 마치 코트의 안감처럼 보이게 만드는 것도 좋은 방법이다. 단, 셔츠는 가급적 소매 길이와 총 길이가 긴 것으로 선택해야 다른 옷과 겹쳐입었을 때 레이어링 효과가 난다.
