[VIDEO NEWS] Air ambulances are coming to the rescue
2) The air ambulance arrived at Seosan City Stadium, South Chungcheong, which was 76 kilometers (47 miles) away from the dispatch point, to pick up an emergency patient 23 minutes after takeoff.
3) Air ambulances are helicopters exclusively used for the swift transfer and first-aid care of emergency patients in areas lacking easily accessible emergency care.
4) They are also called “flying emergency rooms” as they are assigned to certain medical institutions, and are dispatched carrying medical personnel immediately upon request for the care and transfer of emergency patients.
5) A bed for patients is placed in the middle of the helicopter alongside cutting-edge medical equipment, including respirators, automatic chest compressors, thoracostomy gear, diagnostic ultrasound systems and myocardial enzyme measuring instruments.
6) According to the National Medical Center, air ambulances transferred a total of 6,150 patients from 2011 to May of this year.
7) The medical society estimates that, of those who have been transferred by air ambulances, there has been a 90 percent success rate of lives being saved thus far.
8) The Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to create a “trauma map” that takes into consideration the network of roads in each region by 2025.
9) The ministry is also considering allow some air ambulances to fly at night, including the one assigned to Ajou University Hospital in Gyeonggi.
