Typhoon heading to China to send more rain

Typhoon Muifa, which is headed to China via the waters off Japan’s Okinawa, is being forecasted to bring strong winds and rain to the Korean Peninsula.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said Muifa, Cantonese for plum blossom, was packing winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour) and is expected to make landfall on China’s east coast over the weekend and proceed north along China’s eastern coast tomorrow morning.

It will bring rainfall to Korea’s southern island of Jeju today and across the country tomorrow and Monday.

The KMA said Korea could get 20 to 70 millimeters (0.8 to 2.8 inches) of rain over the weekend. Some places could get up to 100 millimeters.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, Muifa was located at 152 kilometers south-southeast of Kadena Air Base on Okinawa.

The KMA also said that due to the strong winds blowing towards the east and south coasts, along with rising sea levels from today to Monday on the coasts, a special weather report of storm surges may be issued in these areas.

Typhoon Mufia is reported to be one of the most powerful storms in recent years, and has central pressure of 945 hectopascals and a maximum instantaneous wind speed reaching 45 meters per second.

The KMA also said that the southern part of the country can expect sweltering heat from next week as a result of a high pressure front on the North Pacific.

태풍 ‘무이파’ 북상 … 시간당 최고 50㎜ 비

남·서해안 강풍·해일 피해 우려
중국 동쪽 해안 따라 이동

북상 중인 제9호 태풍 ‘무이파(MUIFA)’의 영향으로 주말 전국에 다시 많은 비가 내릴 전망이다. 제주도와 남·서해안 등에선 강풍과 해일 피해도 우려되고 있다.

　지난달 28일 미국 괌 서쪽 해상에서 발생한 ‘무이파’는 5일 오후 3시 현재, 일본 오키나와 서남서쪽 90㎞ 해상에서 시속 13㎞의 속도로 북서쪽으로 진행 중이다. 7일 중국 상하이(上海) 근해로 접근한 뒤 해안을 따라 계속 북상, 8일 오후 칭다오(靑島) 남동쪽 70㎞ 해상까지 올라올 것으로 보인다.

　기상청은 5일 “태풍이 중국 동해안을 지나는 동안 제주도와 전남북·충남북, 서울·경기도 등에 강한 바람과 함께 주기적으로 비가 내리겠다”고 예보했다. 비는 6일 아침 남해안과 제주도에서 시작돼 낮에 남부지방 전체로 확대될 것으로 보인다. 중부지방의 경우 6일 오후 늦게나 밤 한두 차례 소나기가 온 후, 7일부터 본격적으로 비가 내릴 전망이다. 특히 해안과 내륙 일부 지방의 경우 시간당 30~50㎜ 이상의 강한 비가 내릴 가능성이 있다고 기상청은 내다봤다.
