Golden Disc nominees redefined K-pop in 2019: Acts like BTS and Twice continued to excel, while new groups made a splash

It was another eventful year for the local music industry. A myriad of K-pop acts debuted and released singles, but only a few of them succeeded in making it big.
Some top-notch musicians maintained their success while others were embroiled in scandals involving chart manipulation with fake IDs.
Despite all the highs and lows, the music industry in and outside the country seems to reach its peak.
According to the annual Global Music Report 2019 published by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry released in April, the world’s music industry raked in $19.1 billion in revenue last year, the highest amount of money it has earned in the past 10 years.
Behind the record-breaking revenues, the report specifically credited BTS, Drake and Ed Sheeran as the recording artists who increased the total sales of the world’s music market.
Prior to the 34th Golden Disc Awards that will be held on Jan. 4 and 5 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in western Seoul, the list of candidates for its two major awards - album and digital song of the year - were unveiled.
Albums and digital songs released between October 2018 and October 2019 are eligible to be nominated for the annual music awards.
A total of 30 artists are nominated for the album category and 10 of them will receive awards on Jan. 5.
Here are some of the musicians who are nominated for the album category.
BTS kept climbing this year as if the sky was the limit for the septet. The boy band’s EP “Map of the Soul: Persona,” released on April 12, reached the No. 1 spots on 86 different iTunes album charts upon its release.
With the EP, BTS went on to set numerous records.
According to Gaon Chart, Korea’s biggest album sales chart, the EP has sold nearly 3.7 million copies so far and the album was also recognized by Guinness World Records for becoming the best-selling album ever in Korea since Gaon began keeping track of album sales in 2011.
Melon, the music streaming service, even crashed after users rushed to stream the boy band’s new album the day it was released.
The album also landed atop the Billboard 200 albums chart, Britain’s Official albums chart and Japan’s Oricon digital albums chart.
The group kicked off their stadium tour in the United States in May and raked in 60 billion won ($51 million) in total through eight shows at four cities across the country.
BTS also performed at iconic venues such as Wembley Stadium in London. In Saudi Arabia, the boy band became the first foreign act to perform a solo concert at King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh.
After BTS performed “Boy with Luv” on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in April, foreign media outlets like CNN, The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Billboard all ran stories about BTS and its debut performance on “SNL.” BTS was the first Korean act to perform on the weekly comedy program.
The year is nearing its end, but BTS has been keeping busy. It recently performed at the Jingle Ball, an annual concert organized by iHeartRadio, along with other famous pop singers including Katy Perry, Sam Smith and Billie Eilish.

K-pop acts often make sub-unit groups and their unique configurations are always welcomed by fans, who are often hard to please.
This year, many groups created spinoff groups and some sub-units were nominated for awards alongside their original groups.
For example, GOT7 and its sub-unit group Jus2, which consists of members JB and Yugyeom, are both nominated for the album category.
GOT7 is scheduled to perform at stadiums in Thailand next year.
The boy band Nu’est, which recently topped local major music shows with “Love Me,” is nominated for the awards along with its sub-unit group Nu’est W.
Yunho, a member of TVXQ, and his group are also competing for the award in the album category.
Four members of Exo made the nomination list. Baekhyun and Chen are listed up as solo singers with their own albums, while Exo-SC, a sub-unit of Sehun and Chanyeol, is also on the nominee list.
Girl power
Girl groups remained strong amid a surge of boy bands.
Red Velvet released two songs, “Zimzalabim” and “Umpah Umpah,” and both were well received by music fans for their exotic melodies and catchy lyrics.
IZ*ONE was undeniably the rookie of the year both in Korea and Japan. Its album “HEART*IZ” sold 250,000 copies in Japan alone.
GFriend broke into the music scene by selling only 500 copies of albums when it debuted in 2015, but the group has been slowly climbing up the charts and has become a girl group that can easily sell 50,000 copies of an album in its fifth year.
Having made her debut in 2007 as a member of Girls’ Generation, Taeyeon has now settled down as a trusted musician. She is nominated in both the album and digital song categories.
Twice aims high this year, too. If the nine-member girl group takes home awards in the album and the digital song categories this year, it will have won Golden Disc Awards in the two main categories for three consecutive years.
Peers become rivals
Former members of the popular project boy band Wanna One are likely to be competitors at the ceremony this year.
The eleven members of Wanna One were put together through the second season of the Mnet audition show “Produce 101.”
Among the 11 members, Kim Jae-hwan and Park Ji-hoon are both nominated for their albums “Another” and “O’Clock.”
Rising starlets
Boy bands Seventeen and Monsta X are getting a lot of attention from fans around the world.
Seventeen’s “Fear” topped the iTunes K-pop albums charts in 24 regions when it was released in September.
Monsta X recently participated in Jingle Bash, the year-end concert hosted by B96, a Chicago radio station, and took the stage with singers like Katy Perry and Camila Cabello.
Since its debut earlier this year, boy band Tomorrow X Together, also known as TXT, has been setting records.
The group sold out all of its debut showcases that were held across six cities in the United States.
TXT’s debut album “The Dream Chapter: Star” ranked as high as 140th on the main Billboard 200 albums chart after its release. The album became the highest-charting debut album from a K-pop boy band.
Stray Kids is also nominated for this year’s album category. The group won the Rookie Artist of the Year last year.
The boy group is scheduled to perform in the United States next year. It will stop in eight cities, including New York, Dallas and Chicago, to meet and perform for their American fans.

지난 1년간 K팝 가수들은 전 세계를 무대로 활동을 펼치며, 대한민국을 알리고 한국대중가요의 위상을 높였다. 국제음반산업협회는 보고서를 통해 "지난해 전세계 음악 산업의 매출은 191억 달러, 약 22조 원을 기록해 지난 10년 동안 가장 많은 수익을 냈다"면서 "방탄소년단이 레코딩 아티스트 2위를 기록하면서 드레이크, 에드 시런과 함께 세계 음반 시장 매출을 견인하는데 가장 큰 공헌을 한 아티스트"라고 평가했다. 방탄소년단뿐 아니라, 세븐틴은 초동기록 70만장이라는 놀라운 기록을 썼고 트와이스는 40만 장대로 올라서며 음반시장 부흥기를 이끌었다. 음원 서비스 시장이 점점 확대되는 가운데 지난해 대비 평균 음반 판매량이 올라갔다는 점에서 주목할 만 하다. 34회 골든디스크어워즈 음반 후보에는 탄탄한 팬덤을 바탕으로 저마다의 위치에서 놀라운 활약을 펼친 가수들이 한데 모였다. 이 가운데 10명(팀)의 음반 본상 수상자는 누가 될지, 2020년 1월 5일 서울 고척스카이돔에서 영광의 얼굴을 확인할 수 있다.
'넘사벽' 방탄소년단
세계 최고의 보이밴드로 거듭난 방탄소년단은 올해도 비상했다. 지난 4월 12일 나온 '맵 오브 더 솔: 페르소나'는 발매 직후 86개 지역 아이튠스 톱 앨범 1위에 오르며 세계적 인기에 시동을 걸었다. 가온차트 기준 368만2000장 이상의 음반 판매고를 올리며, 2011년 가온차트가 집계를 시작한 이래 최다 판매량을 찍고 기네스북에 등재됐다. 국내 최대 음원사이트인 멜론에선 방탄소년단 신곡을 듣기 위해 이용자가 몰리면서 한때 서버가 다운될 정도로 인기가 뜨거웠다. 한국뿐 아니라, 미국 빌보드 메인 앨범 차트인 빌보드 200 1위•영국 오피셜 앨범차트 톱100 1위•일본 오리콘 디지털 앨범 랭킹 1위 등 세계 가요시장을 휩쓸었다. 미국 4개 도시 8회 스타디움 공연으로 약 600억 원을 벌어들였으며, 영국 웸블리부터 사우디아라비아까지 세계 스타디움 공연장을 밟았다. 타이틀곡 '작은 것들을 위한 시'의 첫 컴백 무대였던 미국 NBC의 'SNL'에선 비틀스를 오마주한 무대로 화제를 모았다. CNN은 "방탄소년단은 'SNL'에서 공연한 첫 K팝 그룹"이라며 방청권을 얻기 위해 NBC본사 앞에 줄을 선 팬들을 소개하고, "비틀스 이후 이런 팬덤은 본 적이 없다"고 보도했다. 뉴욕타임스, 롤링스톤, 빌보드, 메트로 등도 앞다퉈 방탄소년단의 소식을 전했다. 연말에도 방탄소년단을 향한 전세계 러브콜은 계속되고 있다. 지난 6일(현지시각)엔 미국 최대 라디오 네트워크인 아이하트라디오에서 주최하는 연말 페스티벌 '징글볼' 오프닝 공연에 초청돼 빌리 아일리시, 케이티 페리, 샘 스미스, 카밀라 카베요, 할시, 프렌치 몬타나, 리조, 노르마니 등 세계적인 아티스트와 어깨를 나란히 했다.
그룹과 유닛으로, 갓세븐•뉴이스트•동방신기•엑소
K팝 그룹의 무한변신은 언제나 대환영이다. 올해도 한 그룹에서 다양한 후보자를 배출했다. 갓세븐은 맏형 JB와 막내 유겸의 유닛 저스투로 후보가 됐다. 갓세븐은 그룹, 유닛, 솔로 등 다양한 매력으로 글로벌 팬들을 사로잡았다. 2020년 태국의 스타디움 공연을 앞두고 있는데, 유겸은 "아레나 공연장에서 성장했음을 느낀다"면서 더 좋은 모습을 보여주겠다고 다짐했다. 최근 '러브 미'로 음악방송 그랜드슬램을 달성하는 등 국내 대세로 떠오른 뉴이스트는 뉴이스트W로도 노미네이트됐다. 각자의 위치에서 열심히 활동한 뜻깊은 성과다. 멤버들은 "팬클럽 러브가 지켜줬기에 가능한 결과"라며 팬사랑을 내비쳤다. 데뷔 16년만에 솔로 데뷔한 동방신기 유노윤호의 저력도 만만치 않다. 동방신기로, 솔로로 동시 후보에 올라 그의 열정만큼이나 변함없는 팬들의 뜨거운 지지를 확인했다. 엑소의 각개전투 또한 인상적이다. 솔로로 나선 백현과 첸, 유닛으로 뭉친 세훈&찬열이 모두 음반 후보에 올랐다. 이들의 앨범판매고를 합치면 무려 110만 장 이상에 달한다.
눈부신 '걸파워' 트와이스→아이즈원
음반시장에도 강력한 여풍이 불었다. 레드벨벳•아이즈원•여자친구•태연•트와이스는 팬과 대중을 모두 사로잡으며 눈부신 약진을 했다. 레드와 벨벳 컨셉트를 오가며 색다른 매력을 보여주고 있는 레드벨벳은 올해 '짐살라빔'•'음파음파'로 독특한 컨셉트에 도전, 팬들의 지지를 얻었다. 아이즈원은 한일 양국의 '슈퍼루키'로 자리매김했다. 후보에 오른 '하트아이즈' 앨범은 25만 장 이상의 판매고로 보이그룹과 어깨를 나란히 했다. 일본 오리콘차트는 "아이즈원은 2019년 상반기 동안 총 매출액 5억1000만 엔(약 56억 원)을 올렸다"며 인기를 조명했다. 청순 매력에 파워풀한 퍼포먼스가 강점인 여자친구는 500장으로 데뷔해 차근차근 성장세를 보이며, 5년 차에 초동 판매량 5만 장을 돌파하는 대표 K팝 걸그룹으로 성장했다. 태연은 '소녀시대 꼬꼬마 리더'에서 '믿듣탱'(믿고 듣는 태연)으로 거듭났다. 음원, 음반 동시 후보에 올라 팬덤과 대중성을 다 잡은 독보적 여성 가수로 입지를 굳혔다. 트와이스는 3년 연속 음원•음반 동시 본상 수상의 영광을 노린다. 이들은 '트와이스의 적은 트와이스'라는 수식어처럼 매 앨범마다 한계를 깨며 새로운 성과를 써내려오고 있다. 체조경기장 매진•일본 돔투어 등 '아시아 원톱 걸그룹'으로 우뚝 선 트와이스는 미국 LA 더 포럼 공연까지 매진시키며 글로벌 확장을 이뤄냈다.
워너원 동료에서 선의의 경쟁자로, 김재환•박지훈•AB6IX
어제의 동료가 오늘의 적으로 만났다. 선의의 경쟁자로 훈훈한 우정을 쌓아온 워너원 멤버들이 34회 골든디스크 어워즈를 통해 조우할 전망이다. 김재환은 춤, 노래, 기타 연주 등 뮤지션 자질을 고루 갖춘 차세대 싱어송라이터로 성장했다. 박지훈에게 자작곡 '이상해'를 선물하는 등 음악적 역량을 보여주고 있다. 연기와 노래 종횡무진 활동 중인 박지훈은 데뷔앨범 '어 클락'으로 음반 후보에 올랐다. 각종 광고 모델까지 섭렵하며 인기를 입증한 그는 최근 신곡 '360'으로 컴백해 자신감 넘치는 퍼포먼스로 눈길을 끌고 있다. 박우진과 이대휘가 속한 AB6IX도 알찬 1년을 보내고 있다. 데뷔 미니앨범과 정규 앨범을 발매하고 음악방송 트로피까지 차지했다. 부상으로 활동을 쉬고 있는 박우진은 김재환의 신곡 '시간이 필요해'의 작사•작곡에 이름을 올리는 등 무대 뒤에서 열일을 펼쳤다.

세븐틴은 가온차트 기준 84만장 이상의 음반 판매고라는 역대급 성적을 냈다. 일본 데뷔 이후 폭풍 성장을 거듭하며 그 인기를 실감 중이다. 미국과 영국 매체도 관심을 보이고 있다. 아이튠스 24개 지역 1위에 오른 이후 외신들은 "노래 '독'에 중독됐다"고 호평했다. 몬스타엑스는 서양권에서 입지를 다지고 있다. 한국과 미국에서 신곡을 꾸준히 발표하며 이슈몰이 중이다. 최근엔 미국 B96 채널 주최로 열린 연말 콘서트 '징글배시'에 케이티 페리, 카밀라 카베요 등과 함께 올랐다. 슈퍼엠으로 미국 활동 신고식을 치른 태민도 솔로 저력을 보여주며 음반 후보에 노미네이트됐다. 데뷔 15년차이자 10년간의 '군백기'를 끝내고 완전체로 돌아온 슈퍼주니어도 현재진행형 인기를 확인했다. 남자 발라드 가수의 자존심은 황치열이 지켰다. 중화권 팬덤을 기반으로 중국 베이징 인민일보사 뉴미디어센터에서 열린 '중국복합문화타운' 조성사업 론칭식에 참석하는 등 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다.
