Ministry warns of computer hackers

The Ministry of Information and Communication issued an emergency warning yesterday saying the frequency of computer hacking in foreign countries through computer servers in Korea has sharply risen. The ministry requested domestic computer users to take greater precautions regarding Internet security after receiving a growing number of reports of "distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks," during the past month. Hackers secretly install programs in a number of computers and remotely control them to log on to Web servers at the same time, resulting in service overloads. The ministry said 115 systems in Korea had been involved in such attacks.
