Hynix joins to build a China factory
Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world’s second-largest maker of memory chips, and STMicroelectronics NV, Europe’s largest semiconductor maker, are planning to build a chip plant in China in 2005. Construction of the plant, an estimated $2-billion facility focused on making DRAM and NAND flash chips in Wuxi City, Jiangsu province, will be started early next year, the companies said today in a PRNewswire statement. Hynix and STMicroelectronics, based in Geneva, have been working together since April 2003 to develop NAND flash memory chips, which store data in memory cards and mobile devices. DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is the main memory in personal computers. The factory will employ about 1,500 people, the companies said.
