기생

설도가 지은 ‘춘망사(春望詞)’라는 시를 김소월의 스승인 시인 김억이 번안해 붙였다. 전체 시의 내용을 그대로 살리지는 못했지만 한 단락을 옮겨 지은 노랫말은 애절한 곡조와 함께 해방 직후 어수선했던 사람들의 마음에 크게 호응했다.

국가에서 정한 표준 영정의 모습과 다르다 해서 5만원권의 신사임당이 “기생을 닮았다” “주모(酒母) 같다”는 비난을 늘어놓는 사람들이 있다. 일단 기생 황진이와 설도가 억울하겠다. 그림은 그림의 문제로만 따지는 게 옳다. 신분과 직업의 귀천을 따져 사람을 평가하는 것은 시대착오적이다. “왕후장상(王侯將相)의 씨가 따로 있느냐”는 말이 나온 게 2200여 년 전이다.
