Fun day out in Songpa 10K run

Yesterday’s JoongAng Seoul Marathon 2009 was more than a stage for elite runners to showcase their skills of endurance.

More than 21,000 participants braved the chilly autumn weather to take part in the 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) event at the marathon. It was a day of fun for families, friends, coworkers and marathon enthusiasts as they rounded the course in Songpa District, southern Seoul.

A senior citizen ran side by side with his young grandson and coworkers who had entered the race encouraged each other. For some it seemed they entered more for the experience. A group of friends took photos on their mobile phones and seemed to enjoy themselves on the brisk Sunday afternoon.

Chae Kwang-seok and Song Eun-joo, a married couple, worked as pace makers, and Lee Don-koo wore his son’s name under his number to bid him luck in his senior year in high school.

For some, the race was more about athleticism. Yeo Jong-sun, a housewife, won her third consecutive 10-kilometer course. The 36-year-old was a long-distance runner in high school and started running again four years ago to keep in shape.

“Life can be repetitive and boring when you’re a housewife. Since I started entering marathons I feel like every day offers a new challenge,” Yeo said in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo.
