Women miss medal rounds

The women’s short-track team in the 500-meter event missed the medal round yesterday.

With Lee Eun-byul, Cho Ha-ri and Park Seung-hi competing, all three Korean skaters failed to reach the finals.

Park finished her heat in second place but was disqualified after officials ruled that she pushed Kalyna Roberge of Canada. Cho finished third in her heat and failed to advance to the semifinals. Lee managed to advance with a second-place finish in her heat, but came in last in the semifinals.

China’s Wang Meng retained her top place in the event with a time of 43.048 seconds; she also took the gold in the 500-meter four years ago in Turin, Italy. Marianne St. Gelais of Canada finished second and Arianna Fontana of Italy came in third.

Kim Min-jung had placed second behind Wang at the World Championships in 2009.

In the men’s short-track 5,000-meter relay, Korea finished first to secure a spot in the finals after competing against the United States, Italy and France.

The men’s team is looking to win Korea back-to-back gold in the relay when the finals take place on Feb. 27.
