Cheonan hero honored with statue

A statue of Warrant Officer Han Ju-ho, who died at the age of 53 while trying to rescue sailors from the doomed Navy corvette Cheonan, was unveiled yesterday at Jinhae Maritime Park in Changwon, South Gyeongsang.

Family members wept as the statue of Han, a husband and father, was unveiled during the ceremony, held to mark the one-year anniversary of the sinking of the Cheonan on March 26 last year.

“It was good of him to be concerned about the security of our nation, but he was so unconcerned for his own safety,” said Han’s wife, Kim Mal-sun, 56, in an interview with Yonhap. “But I’m so proud of him now.”

The ceremony was organized by the Navy Chief of Staff and was attended by 500 people, including family members of the 46 sailors killed in the ship’s sinking, along with military personnel from the Navy and Marine Corps.

The 3.5-meter (11.4-foot) statue was made by Lee Tae-ho, 59, a professor in the art department at Kyung Hee University. It depicts Han fully armed and taking aim with a gun while standing on the edge of a boat. The Navy spent 300 million won ($272,000) to build the monument and pay for land at the park in Jinhae.

“Nothing is impossible,” reads an engraving on a stone pagoda behind the statue. Pictures and writings about Han’s time in the Navy are displayed on stone walls beside the pagoda.

Han’s wife Kim and two children stayed behind after the ceremony to have a private moment with the stone statue.

‘UDT의 전설’ 고(故) 한주호 준위가 동상으로 부활했다.

　30일 그가 생전에 그토록 사랑했던 경남 진해 앞바다에서 한 준위의 동상은 늠름한 모습을 드러냈다. 천안함 폭침 당시 선체 수색과 실종자 구조를 위해 바닷물에 뛰어들었다가 순직한 지 1년 만이다.

　이날 해군 교육사령부 진해루 공원에서 열린 동상 제막식엔 한 준위의 유가족과 해군 관계자, 시민 등 500여 명이 참석했다. 3.6m 높이의 동상은 한 준위가 총을 겨눈 채 보트를 타고 작전 지역으로 향하는 모습을 표현했다.

동상 뒤에는 특수전여단(UDT/SEAL)의 부대마크와 ‘불가능은 없다’란 구호가 새겨졌다.

　한 준위의 부인 김말순(56)씨는 인사말에서 “자신보다 조국과 전우의 안위를 먼저 생각했던 남편이 자랑스럽다”며 “그런 아버지를 본받기 위해 아들이 선생님이 돼 교과서에 담긴 아버지의 희생정신을 가르치고 있다”고 말했다.

김씨가 눈물을 훔치며 “(남편에게) 아무것도 해준 게 없어 미안하다”고 말하자 곳곳에서 흐느끼는 소리가 들렸다. 한 준위의 아들 상기(27)씨와 딸 슬기(21)씨는 아버지의 얼굴을 잊지 않으려는 듯 동상에서 눈을 떼지 않았다.

　김성찬 해군참모총장은 “소말리아 해역의 해적소탕작전과 어렵고 복잡한 구조 현장에는 항상 그가 있었다”며 “불굴의 기상이 담긴 저 동상은 나라 사랑의 정신과 살신성인의 의미를 분명히 말해주고 있다”고 했다.

　1년 전 한 준위와 함께 구조작업을 펼쳤던 UDT 대원들도 자리를 함께했다. 남기천(33) 중사는 천안함 폭침 다음 날 한 준위와 함께 후발대로 투입됐다.

남 중사는 “조류가 세고 시야가 확보되지 않아 하루 한 번도 잠수가 어려운 상황에서 한 준위님은 네 번씩이나 물속에 뛰어드셨다”며 “주변에서 말려도 ‘아들 같은 장병들이 바닷속에 있는데 쉴 수 없다’고 하셨다”고 말했다.

　제막식에 이어 한 준위의 군인정신을 기리기 위해 제정된 ‘한주호 상’ 시상식이 열렸다. UDT 김종훈(52) 원사와 해병대 6여단 특수수색대 박종훈(38) 상사가 첫 번째 상을 받았다. ‘한주호 상’은 매년 그의 정신을 이어받은 해군에게 수여된다.
