New Lions skipper off to good start

For Samsung Lions manager Ryu Joong-il, rejuvenating the team’s past offensive success is going to be crucial to winning the Korean Series this year.

While the Lions have long made offense a main focus, Sun Dong-yol changed that when he took over as manager in 2005. Regarded as the greatest pitcher in Korean Baseball Organization history, he emphasized pitching over everything else. His style worked, with the Lions winning two championships in five years.

But Lions fans wanted more. After the club was swept by the SK Wyverns in the Korean Series last year, fans called for Sun’s head. He was sacked in December.

When Ryu inherited the club on Jan. 5, he expressed his intent to bring “exciting baseball” back to the city of Daegu.

“We were runner-up last season, but we must bring the championship to Daegu this year,” Ryu told Ilgan Sports.

“Sun played a defensive brand of baseball, but he lost and had to resign. I cannot follow in his footsteps,” Ryu added.

Ryu’s commitment to offense has borne fruit in this young season. The Lions scored 14 runs in the opening series against the Kia Tigers - a 6-2 win and a 9-8 loss - the most runs scored by any of the league’s eight clubs in the opening weekend.

However, Ryu knows it’s too early in the season to be holding any celebrations.

“Scoring with home runs does not mean that we are playing offensive baseball,” Ryu said. “What’s more important is that players show fearless and bold swings.”

Ryu has also shown unconditional support to his sluggers by not using pinch hitters when they struggle.

Ryu left in Chae Tae-in on Saturday, even though he struck out three times. Then in the bottom of eighth inning, Chae hit a grand slam, giving the Lions a 6-2 come-from-behind victory.

“I want to answer the wishes of fans who miss the old Lions’ attacking style,” Ryu said. “I prefer aggressive batting rather than bunting.”

The 48-year-old manager still appreciates the role of pitchers, admitting that it is the most important position in the game.

“In baseball, you need to have strong pitchers more than anything,” Ryu said. “With pitchers as a foundation for the team, an offensive brand of baseball will complement any defense.”

In fact, Ryu’s strategy on pitching is more or less the same as the previous manager’s.

Under Sun, the Lions utilized the bullpen effectively. When his starting pitchers allowed no more than three runs by the sixth inning, Sun always went to the bullpen to maintain the lead.

“When it comes to changing a pitcher, my philosophy is that faster is better,” Ryu said. “That is what Sun told me when he left the team. You need to change sooner to maintain momentum.”

And that might be important for a team that gave up 11 runs in its first two games.

But Ryu said the season opener is a good model for the Lions to benchmark for the rest of the season. The Lions showed poise on both offense and defense, he said.

삼성 '공격야구' 류중일 감독의 현재 위치

류중일 삼성 감독은 “작년에 준우승을 했기 때문에 올핸 우승해야 한다”고 했다. 올라갈 틈이 거의 없는 사령탑이 떠안는 부담감은 상당하다. 두 차례나 한국시리즈 우승을 안긴 선동열 감독의 후임이기에 더욱 그렇다. 류 감독은 “선동렬 감독이 지키는 야구를 했지만 계약 기간 4년을 남기고 물러나지 않았나. 똑같이 가면 안 된다고 본다”고 했다. 그가 우승하기 위해 꺼내든 건 화끈한 공격 야구다.

일단 성공

KIA와 개막 2연전에서의 류중일 야구는 일단 성공적이었다. 삼성은 두 경기 연속 11안타를 쳐 14점을 뽑았다. 8개 구단 중 최다 득점이다. 류중일 감독에게 어느 정도 생각대로 풀렸냐고 하자 “단순히 홈런 많은 다득점 경기가 공격 야구는 아니다”는 답이 돌아왔다. 그는 “주눅 들지 않는 스윙이 중요하다”고 했다.

개막 2연전에서 삼성의 공격은 지난해와 달랐다. 번트가 2개밖에 없었고, 한번 신뢰한 타자는 부진해도 끝까지 내보냈다. 2일 채태인이 3연타석 삼진 뒤 만루홈런을 때린 것도 “괜찮으니 자신있게 치라”는 류 감독의 승부수가 적중한 것이었다. 비록 실패했지만 8-9로 뒤진 3일 8회초 무사 1루에서 라이언 가코에게 강공을 지시한 것도 같은 맥락이다. 류 감독은 “과거 삼성의 폭발적인 공격 야구에 목마른 팬들의 기대에 부응하고 싶다. 번트보단 강공, 볼카운트가 유리할 땐 맞히는 데 급급하기보다 과감한 스윙을 주문하고 있다”고 말했다.

삼성 팬들이 공격 야구를 보고 싶어하는 것은 사실이다. 시원한 홈런과 장타로 경기장을 수놓았던 과거 삼성의 힘을 그리워한다. 하지만 이기지 못하는 공격 야구는 패배 그 이상도 그 이하도 아니다. 류 감독도 이 점을 잘 알고 있었다. 그는 “야구는 일단 투수가 강해야 한다. 그래야 공격도 빛을 볼 수 있다”고 했다.

마운드 운용

고작 두 경기였지만 그의 마운드 운용은 합격점을 받을만 했다. 3일 카도쿠라가 2이닝 8실점으로 무너진 것을 빼면 나머지 삼성 투수가 이틀간 내준 점수는 3점에 불과하다. 선발 장원삼과 왼손 불펜 권혁이 부상으로 빠지고 안지만이 선발로 옮긴 가운데 얻은 성과다. 선발투수가 5이닝을 막으면 철벽 계투진이 차례로 나와 경기를 매조지는 선동열 전 감독의 승리 방정식이 그대로 자리하고 있었다.

류중일 감독은 “선동열 감독이 떠나면서 내게 해준 이야기가 있다. 투수 교체는 빠르면 빠를수록 좋다는 조언이었다. 한 박자 빨리 바꿔야 흐름을 끊을 수 있다. 다만 선발 투수는 가급적 길게 끌고가고 싶다”고 말했다.

류중일 감독은 1차전을 6-2로 이긴 뒤 "이런 시합을 자주 했으면 좋겠다"고 했다. 투수는 잘 막고 타자는 잘 친 이상적인 경기, 그것도 역전승이었다. 류중일 야구는 선동열식 지키는 야구와 화끈한 공격야구 사이의 어디쯤이다.
