Europe seeks another run at green jacket

AUGUSTA, Ga. - A green jacket defined the golden era of European golf.

For the better part of two decades, Europeans seemed to have part-ownership of Augusta National by winning the Masters six times in a seven-year stretch, and 11 times in the 1980s and 1990s. Seve Ballesteros was the first European in a green jacket and Nick Faldo won there three times. Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and Jose Maria Olazabal each won twice.

Perhaps it was only fitting that when the world ranking list made its debut in 1986 at the Masters, the top three were Europeans.

“It would be nice to recreate some of that magic,’’ Justin Rose said Monday under the large oak tree next to the Augusta National clubhouse. “And I think this is as good a time as any.’’

On paper, European golf has never been stronger.

They have won two of the last three majors, Martin Kaymer in a playoff at the PGA Championship and Graeme McDowell at Pebble Beach in the U.S. Open. Padraig Harrington was the last player to win successive majors, at the end of 2008.

And then there’s the world ranking.

Europe would have had the top five spots except for Phil Mickelson winning the Houston Open to go to No. 3. As it is, Kaymer and Westwood are Nos. 1 and 2, with Luke Donald, McDowell and Paul Casey at Nos. 4, 5 and 6. Tiger Woods is at No. 7.

About the only thing missing from this new era of European dominance is a green jacket.

“It’s been too long,’’ said Ian Poulter, among those determined to change this trend. “There are more guys with more chances.’’

Olazabal was the last European to win the Masters, holding off Greg Norman in the final round in 1999. A year later, no Europeans were among the top 10 at the Masters and none came particularly close to winning except for Westwood last year when he was runner-up by three shots to Mickelson.

Europe now seems more poised than ever.

In the middle of that great European run from two decades ago, they had four of the top 10 in the world. Now there are six Europeans in the top 10 and nine of the top 20.

“If you look at the guys who compete week in and week out, we’ve got more now than we had 15 years ago,’’ Poulter said.

“There’s definitely more of a chance now but you’ve got a lot of good players to go up against. Tiger and Phil have won quite a few of these jackets over the last few years.’’

Woods and Mickelson have combined to win six of the last 10 times at the Masters, although it’s Mickelson who comes into the first major as the biggest favorite. Not only is he the defending champion but Mickelson made 18 birdies on the weekend to win in Houston.

For a tournament that had lacked a clear favorite, it has one now.

“It seems that everyone has pretty much got Mickelson in the green jacket Sunday evening and there’s not much use in turning up at this point,’’ McDowell said with a grin. “He’s a great player around Augusta and if you finish ahead of him, you’ve got a decent chance.’’

All McDowell wants is a shot on the back nine Sunday.

That would be a good starting point for Europe to win the only major that has eluded them over the last 12 years.

Westwood was just starting to get good as a junior when Faldo won the Masters in back-to-back years.

Then came Welshman Ian Woosnam in 1991, winning with a par on the 18th hole in a year in which Olazabal and Tom Watson were tied for the lead going to the last hole.

Francesco Molinari remembers Olazabal coming back from a career-threatening injury to win in 1999.

“For every European, it was inspiring,’’ Molinari said. “It’s been awhile but I think we’re ready for another run.’’

Poulter was folding shirts and selling candy bars in a golf shop in England toward the end of the European run.

He remembers Woosnam winning, and Langer and Olazabal in back-to-back years. And no one could forget Faldo winning his last green jacket in 1996 when he rallied from a six-shot deficit against Greg Norman.

“They were just so strong,’’ Poulter said. “They were on the board every year. They were the best in the game around that era. I guess it’s been a while since you’ve had those guys back in that position. But if you look at Europe in the world rankings now, we’ve filled that back with guys who are definitely going to have a chance.’

‘명인열전’, 마스터스 주간이다. 해마다 4월 첫째주면 전 세계 골프팬의 시선이 미국 조지아주 오거스타 내셔널골프장으로 쏠린다.

‘구성(球聖)’ 보비 존스가 만든 오거스타 내셔널골프장(파72·7435야드)에서 1934년 처음 시작된 마스터스 토너먼트(총상금 750만달러)는 미국프로골프(PGA) 투어 4대 메이저 가운데 가장 먼저 열리는 대회로 올해로 75회째를 맞는다.

오는 8일(한국시간) 아널드 파머와 잭 니클로스가 1번홀에서 스타팅 오너로 나서는 것으로 시작되는 올해 마스터스에는 역대 우승자와 지난 5년간 메이저대회 우승자, 전년도 US아마추어선수권·US아마추어 퍼블릭링크스챔피언십 우승자, 세계랭킹 50위 이내에 든 선수 등 전 세계의 내로라하는 골퍼 99명이 초청받았다.

◇ 우즈와 미켈슨, 미국의 자존심을 건다 = 마스터스하면 타이거 우즈(35·미국)부터 떠올린다. 마스터스에서 4번이나 우승한 우즈에게 오거스타 내셔널은 홈코스처럼 친숙해 부진을 털고 부활하리라는 전망이다. 지난해 성추문 이후 5개월 만에 처음 출전한 대회인 마스터스에서 우즈는 공동 4위에 올라 이번에도 기대감을 갖게 한다.

우즈와 함께 최근 강세인 유럽골프를 견제할 주자로 꼽히는 필 미켈슨(41·미국)의 행보도 주목을 끈다. 디펜딩 챔피언인 미켈슨은 직전에 열린 셸 휴스턴오픈 우승으로 상승세를 타고 있다. 미켈슨이 2002년 우즈의 대회 2연패 이후 9년 만에 2연패 위업을 달성하면 우즈와 함께 나란히 마스터스 4회 우승을 달성하게 된다. 늘 2인자로 여겨지는 그가 우즈의 그늘에서 완전히 벗어날 기회다.

◇ 무시못할 유럽세 = 우즈의 몰락 후 세계골프는 유럽이 강세다. 그 기세가 시즌 첫 메이저대회인 마스터스까지 이어질지 관심이다.

세계랭킹 1위 마르틴 카이머(독일), 2위 리 웨스트우드(영국), 4위 루크 도널드(영국), 5위 그래엄 맥도웰(북아일랜드), 6위 폴 케이시(영국), 9위 로리 매킬로이(북아일랜드)까지 세계랭킹 ‘톱10’ 가운데 6명이 유럽선수다.

지난해 4대 메이저대회 가운데 마스터스를 제외하고 3개를 휩쓴 유럽세가 이번에는 마스터스까지 삼킬 기세다. PGA챔피언십 우승에 이어 2연속 메이저대회 우승을 노리는 카이머와 메이저 무관의 한을 풀려는 웨스트우드가 주목을 끄는 가운데 세계랭킹 6위내 선수는 이번 대회 우승으로 단번에 세계랭킹 1위로 도약할 수 있어 어느 때보다 경쟁이 치열할 전망이다.

◇ 아시아 첫 그린재킷은 가능한가 = 1973년 한장상 현 한국프로골프협회 고문이 오거스타 골프장에 첫발을 디딘 후 시작된 한국의 마스터스 도전은 올해 맏형 최경주(41·SK텔레콤)와 양용은(39)이 선두에 서고 한국골프의 미래를 짊어진 신예들이 도전해 어느 때보다 기대된다.

9년 연속 마스터스 초청장을 받은 최경주와 양용은은 지난해 나란히 ‘톱10’에 진입한 좋은 기억을 안고 오거스타를 밟았고, 마스터스에서 3위까지 한 앤서니 김(26·나이키골프)도 샷감을 조율했다.

이 밖에 나상욱(28·타이틀리스트)과 지난해 일본프로골프 상금왕 김경태(25·신한금융그룹), 2010 브리티시아마추어 골프대회 우승자 정연진(21), US아마추어 퍼블릭링크스 챔피언십 우승자 라이언 김(22·김준민), 지난해 US아마추어 챔피언십 2위 데이비드 정(21)도 출전한다.

■ 출전 선수 이모저모
‘터줏대감’ 랑거 부상으로 포기…첫 출전 신인도 19명

○…1985년과 93년 두 번이나 그린재킷을 입은 독일 골프의 영웅 베른하르트 랑거가 지난달 말 왼쪽 엄지손가락을 다쳐 대회에 나가지 않기로 했다. 20회 넘게 마스터스에 출전한 ‘터줏대감’ 랑거는 자전거 사고로 인대 수술을 받아 5주는 꼼짝없이 쉬어야 한다는 의사의 조언을 따라 결국 대회 출전을 포기했다.

○…벤 크렌쇼의 캐디인 칼 잭슨(64)이 올해로 50번째 오거스타를 밟는다. 흑인인 잭슨은 인종차별이 심하던 61년 14살의 나이로 빌리 버크의 골프백을 메기 시작한 뒤 딱 한 번을 제외하곤 해마다 마스터스에 출전했다. 특히 95년 크렌쇼가 우승한 뒤 대회 직전 사망한 스승 하비 페닉을 기억하며 그린에 주저앉아 울 때 등 뒤에서 크렌쇼의 어깨를 따스하게 감싸안는, 마스터스에 남을 명장면을 연출하기도 했다.

○…이번 마스터스에 처음 출전하는 신인은 모두 19명. 이 가운데는 올 시즌 투어 우승자로 생애 첫 오거스타를 밟는 조나탄 베가스(베네수엘라), 마크 윌슨, 게리 우드랜드, D A 포인츠 등과 함께 미국 골프의 기대주로 꼽히는 리키 파울러 등이 포함됐다. 마스터스에서 공식적으로 첫 출전에 우승한 기록은 딱 한 번뿐으로 79년 퍼지 죌러가 루키로 그린재킷을 입었다.
