European Tour in town this week with strong field

The European Tour comes to Korea this week for its only tournament here, with a strong field of golfers vying for a total purse of 2.2 million euros ($3.2 million).

The Ballantine’s Championship, sponsored by the Scotch producer, will take place from Thursday to Sunday at the Blackstone Golf Club in Icheon, about 80 kilometers south of Seoul. This is the fourth Ballantine’s Championship in Korea but the three previous editions were held on Jeju Island in the southern part of the country.

Blackstone, which opened in 2009, will host the tournament until 2013. The Ballantine’s Championship will be Blackstone’s first professional event.

The tournament is sanctioned by both the European Tour, Asian Tour and the Korea PGA.

World No. 1 Lee Westwood of England and three-time major champion Ernie Els of South Africa headline the field.

Westwood dethroned Tiger Woods as the No. 1 golfer in the world last fall but fell to No. 2 in February before reclaiming the top spot with a win last weekend in Indonesia.

The Englishman, who also played at the Ballantine’s in 2009, is the first No. 1-ranked golfer to compete in a tournament in Korea.

“It is exciting that the event is moving to Blackstone; I’ve heard great things about the venue,” Westwood said through tournament organizers. “Like the vast majority of the players, it will be my first time there so it promises to be quite a challenge.”

Els was in contention at his two previous Ballantine’s tournaments. He said the goal this time is to “take any chances that come my way and be in the mix again on Sunday.”

Miguel Angel Jimenez, a Spaniard who has won 18 times on the European Tour, and Dustin Johnson, an American with four PGA Tour wins, have also committed.

Englishman Ian Poulter, known for both his playing skills and colorful outfits, will play at the Ballantine’s for the first time. He finished runner-up at the 2008 Korea Open.

Among local stars, Yang Yong-eun will make his third Ballantine’s appearance. Affectionately called Y.E. Yang outside his native land, Yang stunned Tiger Woods to win the 2009 PGA Championship and in the process became the first major champion from Asia.

“It’s always thrilling to play before home fans. Korean fans are passionate and knowledgeable [about] golf,” Yang said through the tournament organizers. “I know fans are especially proud of seeing their native sons play against world-class golfers. I am really eager to play in this tournament.”

Noh Seung-yul, the reigning money champion of the Asian Tour, will be showcasing his talents before home fans for the second straight year. The 19-year-old is the youngest ever winner of the Asian Tour money title and he was fourth at last year’s Ballantine’s.

“I’ve yet to win as a professional in front of my home fans and the Ballantine’s Championship would be the perfect time to do so,” Noh said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Organizers said the tournament has moved to Blackstone since its proximity to Seoul would attract more star players and more fans.

“Over the last three years, the Ballantine’s Championship has become firmly established as one of the premier events in Asia,” Keith Waters, chief operating officer of the European Tour, said through a press release. “This move to Blackstone will further enhance the championship’s credentials.”

대한민국에 이런 골프 대회는 없었다. 가장 좋은 계절, 최고의 골프 스타들이 한국의 심장부에서 샷대결을 펼친다. 유러피언 투어 발렌타인 챔피언십이 28일 경기도 이천의 블랙스톤 골프장(파72·7254야드)에서 개막한다.

　등장 인물은 골프 황제 타이거 우즈를 끌어내리고 세계 랭킹 1위에 올랐던 리 웨스트우드(잉글랜드·현재 2위), 덩크슛을 할 정도로 운동 신경이 좋은 신예 장타자 더스틴 존슨(미국·랭킹 12위), 물 흐르듯 부드러운 스윙을 하는 황태자 어니 엘스(남아공·15위), 골프계의 최고 멋쟁이 스타 이언 폴터(잉글랜드·16위) 등이다. 또 경기 중 시가를 피우고 경기를 마친 뒤에는 와인을 마시며 인생을 즐기는 스페인의 낭만주의자 미겔 앙헬 히메네스, 아시아인 첫 메이저 챔피언 양용은(39), 지난해 일본 투어 상금왕 김경태(25·신한금융)도 참가한다.

한국에 빅스타가 온 일은 가끔 있었다. 타이거 우즈(미국)는 두 차례 한국에 왔다. 2004년엔 제주도에서 열린 스킨스 대회에, 올해는 스폰서인 나이키골프의 행사에 참가하기 위해 잠깐씩 머물다 갔다. 그러나 두 번 다 정식 대회는 아니어서 골프의 짜릿한 긴장감을 주지는 못했다.

　정식 대회에 정상급 스타들이 온 일도 있다. 신한동해오픈이나 한국 오픈, SK텔레콤 오픈 등에서 세계적인 스타를 한두 명씩 초청한다. 어니 엘스와 이언 폴터 등이 그래서 이미 한국 땅을 밟았다. 그렇지만 이렇다 할 경쟁 상대가 많지 않아 맥이 빠지는 부분이 없지 않았다.

유러피언 투어와 PGA 투어 대회가 한국에서 처음 열리는 것은 아니다. 그러나 날씨가 좋은 계절에는 유럽이나 미국에서 대회가 꽉 차 있기 때문에 비시즌인 겨울 시간을 한국에 배정해 줬다. 겨울에는 코스 상태가 나쁘기 때문에 선수들이 최고의 기량을 발휘하지 못한다. 너무 추워서 서울 인근에서는 대회를 열 수 없었다. 그래서 제주에서 대회가 열렸는데 제주 역시 겨울에는 골프를 하기에 적당하지 않다. 게다가 갤러리도 많지 않기 때문에 대회는 맥이 빠지는 경우가 많았다. 갤러리 없는 골프 대회는 관객 없는 연극무대와 같다는 말도 나왔다.

　올해 발렌타인 챔피언십은 날씨가 가장 좋은 4월 말 수도권에서 경기를 치른다. 필드에 초록색 잔디가 돋아나듯 선수들의 기량은 물이 올랐다. 약 34억원의 상금을 놓고 세계 정상급 선수들이 치열한 대결을 펼치게 된다. 한국 땅에서 열리는 첫 특급 대회라 해도 과언이 아니다.

　한국의 골프팬들은 TV에서 수준 높은 경기를 많이 봤다. 그러나 직접 두 눈으로 최고의 경기를 볼 기회는 없었다. 리 웨스트우드는 “한국 팬들에게 진정한 골프 대회를 관전하는 기쁨을 전해드리고 싶다”고 말했다.
