E Jiah drops 5.5 billion won lawsuit against Seo

Eleven days after admitting she had been married to legendary rock star Seo Taiji for years, actress E Jiah dropped a 5.5 billion won ($5.1 million) lawsuit for alimony and division of property, saying the publicity was too much for her.

And Seo himself made his first public comment since the daily SportsSeoul broke the scoop on April 21 that the celebrity couple married secretly in 1997 and kept it from their fans.

On a posting on his Internet homepage Saturday, Seo, 39, apologized for concealing the truth and asked for the understanding of fans.

“I’m sorry that I could not talk about the truth,” he wrote. “I’ve learned a lot and I hope the day comes when we can talk about it more freely.”

E’s agency KeyEast confirmed that E and Seo were married in the United States in 1997 and divorced in 2009. Seo’s agency says the couple divorced in 2006. E was suing Seo for 5 billion won in divided property and 500 million won in alimony until she dropped the suit Saturday.

According to E Jiah’s legal representative, “[E Jiah] decided to withdraw the case as the whole process causes so much pain to herself and the people around her following an excessive invasion of privacy.”

According to several media reports, E dropped the lawsuit against Seo after agreeing to a settlement of a minimum of 1 billion won. Seo’s talent agency denied the reports yesterday.

이지아 ‘서태지 소송’ 취하…분쟁 종결될 듯

가수 겸 작곡가 서태지(39ㆍ본명 정현철)와 배우 이지아(33ㆍ본명 김지아)의 결혼과 이혼을 둘러싼 법적 분쟁이 일단락될 전망이다.

이지아의 소송 대리를 맡은 법무법인 바른은 30일 "이지아가 결혼 및 이혼 소식이 알려진 뒤 지나친 사생활 침해 등으로 본인뿐 아니라 주변 사람들까지 극심한 정신적 고통을 받게 돼 긴 시간이 예상되는 소송을 끌고 가기 어려워 소취하를 결정했으며 오늘 취하서를 법원에 냈다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "부정확하게 제기되는 여러 쟁점이나 이혼 사유 등에 대해 더는 논란이 확대되지 않기를 바라는 입장"이라고 덧붙였다.

이에 따라 서태지가 이에 동의하거나 2주 동안 특별한 대응을 하지 않으면 소취하가 성립하며 특별한 변수가 없는 한 재판이 종결될 것으로 전망된다.

서태지는 이날 오후 보도자료를 내고 "이지아와 1997년 10월 미국에서 둘만의 혼인신고를 마치고 부부 생활을 시작했으나 성격과 미래상이 달라 2000년 6월 별거를 시작했고 2006년 8월 부부 관계가 종결됐다"며 결혼과 이혼을 처음으로 인정했다.

한편, 이지아의 소속사에서는 소 취하 신청서 제출 사실을 몰랐으며 이지아와는 연락이 두절된 상태라서 우려스럽다고 입장을 표명했다.

이지아는 서태지를 상대로 위자료 5억원과 재산분할 명목으로 50억원을 요구하는 위자료 및 재산분할 청구 소송을 지난 1월19일 서울가정법원에 제출했으며 이달 21일 이 같은 사실이 알려지면서 큰 파문이 일었다.
