Professor at Kaist dies after sudden collapse

A Canadian professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kaist) died suddenly, one day before his 46th birthday, police said yesterday.

Christopher Surridge, who taught English at the top Korean science university, collapsed at Seoul’s Yongsan Station on Tuesday afternoon and was immediately sent to a nearby hospital where he died shortly afterward, according to Kaist officials.

Surridge has been with Kaist as a visiting professor since February 2008.

Police said they are looking into whether the professor was suffering from a chronic disease, and plan to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of his unexpected death.

A memorial service is scheduled on Wednesday to pay tribute to him, officials said, noting a funeral will be conducted in his home country at the request of his family.

His death came after four KAIST students and one professor committed suicide this year.

학생들의 연이은 자살로 충격에 빠져 결국 총장의 사과가 이어졌던 카이스트(KAIST 한국과학기술원)가 이번에는 외국인교수가 돌연사하는 슬픔을 겪게 됐다.

카이스트는 지난 5월 4일 카이스트 인문사회과학과 크리스토퍼 서리지(Christopher Surridge, 46, 캐나다) 초빙 외국인교수가 사망했다고 6일 밝혔다.

카이스트에 따르면 외국인교수인 서리지 교수는 이날 오후 4시께 서울 용산역에서 기차를 타려다 심장마비 증세로 쓰러져 병원으로 옮겨졌지만 결국 사망했다.

서리지 외국인교수는 지난 2008년부터 카이스트에서 영어를 가르쳐왔다. 특히 평소 활기찬 모습을 보이며 수업을 해 학생들 사이에서도 인기가 많은 외국인교수였다.

카이스트는 오는 11일 학내 인터내셔널하우스에서 서리지 외국인교수 추모식을 가질 예정이다. 서리지 외국인교수 장례는 유족 측의 요청에 따라 캐나다에서 거행될 것으로 알려졌다.
