After early struggles, Ji scores first goal of year

Last winter’s national football team sensation Ji Dong-won notched his first goal seven games into the K-League season last Saturday, helping the Chunnam Dragons to a 2-1 victory over Suwon.

After the game, Ji said he is still not ready to recommit to the national team since ruling himself out of international play after sustaining bruises to his right knee in February.

At the game in Suwon, the 20-year-old striker clinched an equalizer just two minutes into the second half. Confronting Korean national team goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong, Ji sliced the ball into the bottom left corner.

“I feel relieved that I finally got the first goal of the season,” Ji told Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper. “There is no such thing as a sophomore jinx [for me].”

Ji, who collected eight goals in 26 games in his rookie season, has struggled this year.

The striker missed two games with his injury, and furthermore, Ji’s participation in two competitions last winter - the Asian Games in November and the Asian Cup in January - had him showing signs of fatigue early in the new K-League campaign.

Another factor contributing to his struggles has been the fact that opposing teams are marking him closely because of his outstanding performance at the Asian Cup.

“When he gets the ball, two or three defenders surround him,” said Jung Hae-seong, the head coach of the Chunnam Dragons.

And off the pitch, Ji might be mentally fatigued due to obligations with the national teams. The Chunnam striker was highly coveted by the under-20 national team and the senior A-level national team. But for now, the burden is too heavy on him.

“Ji has been concerned about national team issues these days,” Jung said. “All eyes were on him and he was under pressure to do well.”

Jung added that Ji might have gotten the monkey off his back with the goal, but the striker will probably have to take some time off from the national teams to regain his form and stamina.

“I am happy that he scored a goal, but I am worried that he might have to live in Seoul in order to meet all the calls from the each national team,” Jung said.

Ji has nine caps for the Korean national team. He admitted that playing for the U-20 national team, on the Olympic squad and in senior national team games has been too much for his young body to handle.

“I don’t think I am going to play for all three national teams,” Ji said. “What’s important is that I am not in good enough shape to play on the senior national team right now.”

Ji said his first priority is to get himself into top form. Since his professional debut last year, the striker has been known for his physical dominance in the penalty box area.

“I am not concerned about whether I am going to play for the national team or not,” Ji said. “I am not ready and I need to solve my personal problems, such as my strength and stamina.”

"국가 대표팀에서 뛸 수 있는 몸 상태가 아니다."

대표팀 차출 논란의 중심에 선 공격수 지동원(20·전남 드래곤즈)이 솔직한 심경을 밝혔다. 지동원은 7일 수원월드컵경기장에서 열린 수원 삼성과 경기에서 시즌 1호 골을 넣고 2-1로 역전승한 뒤 "시즌 첫 골이 터져 홀가분하다"면서도 "하지만 골이 중요한 게 아니다. 경기력을 끌어올리는 게 중요하다. 아직은 국가 대표팀 수준이 아니다"고 말했다.

정해성 전남 감독은 이날 지동원을 리그 7경기 만에 벤치에 앉혔다. 쏟아지는 관심에서 벗어나 조금이나마 부담을 덜라는 의미에서다. 그는 후반전이 시작하자마자 투입돼 2분 만에 마수걸이 골을 터뜨렸다. 수원 수비 뒷공간을 돌파해 30m 를 질주한 뒤 왼쪽 구석을 노려 골망을 갈랐다. 하지만 이 외에는 별다른 활약을 하지 못했다. 그는 "아직 부족하다. 첫 골은 기쁘지만 내 스스로 해결해야할 문제가 있다. 체력적으로 준비가 덜 됐다. 또 아직까지 근력도 부족하다"고 말했다. 준비가 되지 않은 상태에서 대표팀 이야기가 흘러나와 부담이 됐다는 뜻으로 해석된다.

지동원은 올 시즌 초 부진에 빠졌다. 부상으로 초반 2경기에 출전하지 못했다. 2월 일본 전지훈련 당시 오른쪽 무릎 타박상으로 전치 3주 진단을 받아서다. 지난해부터 이어온 무리한 일정 탓에 부상 회복이 더딘 탓도 있다. 그는 지난해 10월까지 리그에서 뛴 데 이어 아시안게임(지난해 11월)·아시안컵(1월)까지 출전했다. 3월 20일 서울전에 첫 모습을 드러냈지만 이후 6경기 연속 득점 사냥에 실패했다. 움직임이 둔했고 지난해 보여줬던 날카로움이 사라졌다. 상대팀으로부터는 집중 견제를 받았다. '지동원만 막으면 이길 수 있다'는 생각 때문에 그가 공을 잡으면 두세 명이 달라붙었다. 그래서 최전방에서 고립되는 모습이 종종 보였다.

또 차출 논란까지 불거지면서 마음 고생을 했다. A대표팀·올림픽 대표팀·청소년 대표팀에서 모두 그를 원해 '어린 선수를 혹사 시키는 게 아니냐'는 지적이 여기저기서 흘러나왔다. "어디든지 불러주면 열심히 하겠다"고 말했지만 마음이 편할 리 없었다. 정 감독은 "(지)동원이가 대표팀 때문에 계속 고민을 하더라. 관심이 집중돼 힘들어했다. 더 잘해야한다는 압박감도 가지고 있었다"고 말했다. 이어 "동원이 골을 넣어 다행이지만, 이러다가 각급 대표팀 때문에 광양에서 서울로 이사 가는 게 아닌가 싶다"며 허탈한 웃음을 지었다.

한편 대한축구협회 기술위원회는 9일 오전 기술위원회를 열어 대표팀 운영 방안을 논의한다. 이회택 위원장은 "지동원 등 각급 대표팀 일정이 겹치는 선수들이 어느 쪽에 집중할지 등을 논의해 결론을 내리겠다"며 "어떻게 나올지 모르지만 기술위위원회의 결정을 감독들이 받아들일 것으로 생각한다"고 말했다.
